Broad Functions:
HIU is looking for an engaged, dynamic, dedicated, and ambitious Director of Development to help guide our institution into a bright future. We have an exciting strategic plan and a healthy amount of aspiration. We seek an energetic team player to create and oversee the implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising locally, nationally, and internationally to meet the university’s financial goals, enhance the mission and vision of the university, expand our donor base, and serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, help grow the university and maximize its community impact, the individual must be committed to a high standard of excellence and perform the following duties satisfactorily. The successful candidate
Strengthens relationships with key constituents, builds opportunities for outreach to the Hartford community and beyond, and searches for new foundation prospects.
Works closely with the President to steward existing relationships and cultivate new ones.
Creates and implements an annual development plan and strategy to meet the university’s needs in partnership with the President and the External Relations and Recruitment Committee of the Board.
Plans, manages, and implements all phases of the Annual Fund campaign, End of Year Appeal, and all other appeals, as well as acts as major gift solicitor. Provides oversight to all research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship requirements. Attends HIU events and other events to support donor engagement.
Works in collaboration with the Communications Department to plan fundraising events and oversee the execution of all cultivation events.
Responsible for annual support, legacy gifts, endowment and programmatic donations.
Provides leadership on and is responsible for gift acknowledgement letters and other stewardship-related communications programs.
Works with the President and External Relations and Recruitment Committee of the Board to develop and implement capital campaigns as required.
Provides leadership on and is responsible for the overall management of the University’s donor database.
Supervises the part-time Development Assistant, who is responsible for data entry and upkeep.
Oversees all aspects of grant management with assistance from the Development Assistant and other staff to support the preparation of grant applications, reporting requirements, and timely submissions. Facilitates communication with respect to all grants, including those from foundations.
Collaborates with the Director of Communications in planning and implementing outreach, with special attention to expanding financial support for and overall interest in HIU, including but not limited to the University’s weekly newsletters, web page stories and blogs, social media campaigns, campaign literature, and the annual 1834 Magazine.
Maintains a close and collaborative relationship with the Academic Dean and program directors to promote the work of the University using an understanding of HIU's mission and programs.
Serves as an informed and enthusiastic institutional spokesperson locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally as appropriate, especially on matters related to engagement, philanthropy, and alumni relations.
Provides leadership to and is responsible for the University’s Alumni Association, working closely with the Board’s External Relations and Recruitment Committee, and the Alumni Council.
Ensures digital media and other University publications retain and promote a focus on alumni, their interests, their needs, their engagement, and their potential philanthropy.
Informs, engages, and inspires HIU Ambassadors, and strengthens Trustee relationships in collaboration with the President and the Board Chair. This includes a focus on annual and legacy giving, programming, and communication.
Coordinates with the Business Office to ensure transactions are reconciled between both the Development and the general ledger systems.
Contributes to and promotes a positive image of HIU throughout all areas of responsibility.
Occasionally required to travel and attend meetings, activities, and events outside normal working hours.
Other Duties as assigned:
As is expected of all employees, provide backup support for the University’s major events (e.g., Graduation and Convocation) and general activities, as needed.
Education and/or Experience:
Must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years’ proven experience in direct fundraising and managing fundraising campaigns. Familiarity with Bloomerang a plus.
Demonstrated record of success in generating significant commitments from individuals, foundations, and other sources.
A visionary and strategic thinker who is goal-oriented.
Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective donors and interact via telephone, online and in-person with funders.
Must be an excellent networker.
Possess high standards of integrity, credibility, and reliability to articulate the needs, opportunities, and aspirations of HIU with clarity and enthusiasm.
Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and to work under deadlines.
Physical Requirements:
Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Adjusting or moving objects up to 25 pounds in all directions. Communicating with others to exchange information. Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Ability to drive.
