The Central Valley Community Foundation (CVCF) has been a trusted leader in local philanthropy for nearly 60 years. As the only nationally accredited community foundation serving Merced, Mariposa, Madera, Fresno, Tulare and Kings counties, we are exclusively dedicated to this region. We offer donors innovative and flexible charitable tools and help maximize the impact of their giving. We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Director of Communications to lead our communications department. Under the direction of the President and CEO, the Director of Communications will strengthen, develop, and deliver strategic and compelling communications, public relations and marketing efforts that advance CVCF, its impact programs, and strategic priorities. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops, leads and implements a comprehensive communications strategy and plan for: Central Valley Community Foundation, our impact programs (presently, Fresno DRIVE, Farms Food Future, Sierra San Joaquin Jobs), and the Central Valley Opportunity Fund.
  • Manages both an internal team and a team of contractors as well as the departmental budget.
  • Ensures primary messages are delivered accurately and on a timely basis across all available communication platforms.
  • Identifies key stories that reflect strategic priorities and determines the best platform(s) for distribution.
  • Ensures templates and marketing/communication materials are available to support the organization's goals.
  • Ensures CVCF's outreach (materials, messaging, and content), including media relations, news releases, op-ed pieces, story pitches, etc., are well executed and support communication goals.
  • Oversees and ensures effectiveness of CVCF and initiative program websites.
  • Guarantees discipline in message and platforms for CVCF's and initiatives' brands.
  • Oversees and ensures the effectiveness of CVCF's and initiatives' event planning efforts.
  • Leads the development of marketing materials and public relations for key events and milestones and oversees a working library of materials including photos, templates and all elements of brand identity.
  • Strengthens engagement with donors, prospects, community leaders and local nonprofit leaders in ways that advance CVCF's mission and strategic plan priorities.
  • Ensures a highly capable and productive communications team (internal and contractors) through selection, performance management and effective leadership.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of communication strategies and events through a variety of metrics.


The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Four-year undergraduate college degree in marketing, communications or public relations required (master's degree preferred)
  • Five to seven years of professional experience leading marketing, communications, branding, or related teams in a complex organization with multiple communication objectives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with the staff, board of directors, committees, contractors, and other community groups.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills including the ability and credibility to engage and interact with key leaders from the community's businesses, faith organizations, government, nonprofits, other foundations and target audiences.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology for communications, documentation, analysis, reporting, research and scheduling.
  • Ability to articulate the mission and vision of the organization and the benefits of philanthropy within our community, serving in the role of ambassador of CVCF.
  • Ability to holistically support the communications, public relations and marketing needs of multiple workstreams and manage the individuality and intersectionality of each.
    • Must be articulate, professional, and able to manage high priority, competing demands throughout the day and maintain a calm, professional working environment.
    • Experience with communications campaigns that engage the community, shape public opinion and/or mobilize volunteers and the broader public preferred.
    • Ability to proofread his/her/their own work and the work of others to produce high quality, accurate, documents and reports.
    • Ability to interact with the public, answer questions, maintain a professional appearance and use wisdom and discretion in all interactions with the public.
    • Must be flexible and able to adapt to changing organizational needs.
    • Ability to maintain a positive appearance and attitude throughout the workday.
    • Current California driver's license, valid vehicle registration and insurance required for driving on company business.

    • Position offers a competitive salary between $119,000 - $138,000 annually with a generous benefits plan including Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Vacation, Sick Time, and 403(b) with Company match.
