The WHILL organization in North America has 2 primary lines of business:
Mobility Services –includes the autonomous, on-site fleet lease, and individual short-term rental services.
Mobility Sales –includes sale of new products through brick-and-mortar retail, online, and alternative product distribution channels.
Job Title: Director of Business development for Short Term Rental and On-Site Fleet Service
Location: Orland base (Prefer), +50% travel component
Reports to: CEO or VP of North America Business Development
Compensation: 80-120K base + Bonus commission
As the Director of Business Development, you will be directly responsible for driving the strategic direction and growth of our B2B sales efforts in the fleet management and mobility device rental sectors. You’ll be at the forefront of building new business relationships, securing key partnerships, and expanding our customer base. In this start-up environment, you’ll be expected to roll up your sleeves, manage multiple responsibilities, and make an immediate impact in a high- energy, fast-paced atmosphere. Your role will be crucial in building the foundation for long-term growth and success.
This is a hands-on leadership role that will require a combination of strategic thinking, business acumen, and an ability to execute quickly. You will work closely with senior leadership to refine the go-to-market strategy, ensure sales targets are met, and help shape the future of the company.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the development and execution of the B2B sales strategy , driving revenue growth through the acquisition of new corporate clients and long-term partnerships in the fleet management and mobility device rental space.
Identify and target key industries such as logistics, transportation, attractions & entertainment industry, healthcare, and other sectors that require fleet management solutions and mobility devices.
Develop tailored sales strategies to meet the needs of enterprise clients, ensuring that the company's offerings are positioned as the most efficient, cost-effective solutions for their fleet and mobility needs.
Client Acquisition & Relationship Building
Prospect and close new B2B clients , focusing on creating relationships with senior decision-makers (e.g., fleet managers, supply chain directors, Procurement department leaders, etc.).
Lead complex negotiations with large organizations, understanding their pain points and customizing offers to meet their specific fleet management and mobility requirements.
Build strong, long-term relationships with key accounts, ensuring customer satisfaction and fostering loyalty.
Serve as the primary point of contact for major business accounts, ensuring smooth communication, building and growing brand loyalty and top-tier service delivery.
Lead by example , actively contributing to day-to-day sales activities, including direct client interactions, proposal development, presentations, and contract negotiations.
Mentor and guide a growing sales team, setting clear targets, providing coaching, and ensuring that the team’s efforts are aligned with the company’s goals.
Manage the entire sales cycle, from lead generation to closing deals, while maintaining focus on consistent performance metrics.
Market Insights & Product Strategy
Continuously analyze market trends, customer feedback, and competitors to ensure the company remains at the forefront of fleet management and mobility device rental solutions.
Work closely with product development and marketing teams to ensure that the company’s product offerings align with client needs, and communicate customer insights to improve products and services. Develop pricing strategies, build business models and proposals that maximize value for clients while ensuring profitability.
Cross-functional Collaboration
Collaborate with marketing, operations, product planning teams to ensure alignment of sales efforts with company capabilities and market positioning.
Provide input on the company’s go-to-market strategy, working with leadership to refine product offerings, brand messaging, and client communication.
Partner with customer success teams to ensure a seamless experience for clients post-sale, identifying opportunities for upselling, cross-selling, and service expansion.
Communicate product plans and updates effectively across the organization.
What We’re Looking For
12+ years of B2B business development experience, with a focus on fleet management, mobility solutions, or related industries.
Proven success in growing revenue through new business acquisition and long-term partnership development.
Experience in a start-up environment where hands-on execution, agility, and adaptability were essential to success.
Strong background in sales leadership and building out a sales function, with experience leading teams to achieve sales targets.
Experience working directly with enterprise-level clients and negotiating high-value deals.
Essential Job Functions and Physical Requirements
Travel Requirements: This position requires air travel approximately +50% of the time. The ability to travel independently by airplane is an essential function of this role, including occasional overnight stays and availability outside of standard business hours based on operational needs.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20–25 pounds independently.
Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
Ability to occasionally bend, kneel, crouch, or reach to perform routine or business-related tasks.
Active participation in virtual meetings is an essential function of this role. The employee must be able to consistently engage in scheduled video calls, presentations, and team discussions using various video conferencing platforms.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities with attention to detail and responsiveness.
Ability to work independently while also collaborating in a team environment.
Remote Work Requirements:
Must have access to a reliable internet connection and maintain a professional, distraction-free remote work environment.
Must be available during core business hours unless otherwise approved by management.
Ability to operate a computer, phone, and standard office equipment for extended periods.
Proficiency or willingness to learn digital platforms for communication, documentation, and task management.
Attendance and Time Commitment:
Regular, predictable attendance is required.
Timely responsiveness and presence during scheduled virtual meetings and operational check-ins is expected.
