The New World Symphony (NWS) is a laboratory for generating new ideas about the way music is taught, presented, and experienced. Under the direction of Artistic Director Stéphane Denève, its unique fellowship program trains music school graduates for leadership roles in the field of classical music. Job DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Business Development maximizes New World Symphony’s (NWS’s) earned revenue through the booking and project management of third-party rental events at the New World Center (NWC). Reporting to the Vice President of Business Development (VP of BD), the role is a driving force in meeting and exceeding revenue goals by managing client, vendor and partner relationships and ensuring the flawless execution of assigned rental events. The Director works in close collaboration with other departments to maximize venue utilization and maintain the highest standards of client satisfaction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- In collaboration with the VP of BD, contribute to the establishment of annual departmental and revenue goals that support the achievement of NWS’s institutional priorities
- Ensure timely response to all venue rental inquiries
- Coordinate with staff across the organization to establish availability of spaces and services for prospective client events
- Track prospects through sales cycle, ensuring accurate data collection and management in various databases, including Salesforce, Concord and ArtsVision
- Coordinate and conduct site visits and presentations to prospective clients, effectively showcasing the unique features and capabilities of NWC spaces
- Serve as the primary salesperson and point of contact for assigned clients, managing initial inquiry, contract negotiation, event coordination, event execution and closing
- Collaborate closely with internal departments including Facilities, Production, Security, and Guest Services to ensure seamless coordination and delivery of services
- Address client concerns and resolve issues promptly and professionally to ensure high satisfaction
- Work with Finance department to ensure all financial transactions, including deposits, final payments, and invoicing, are processed accurately and in a timely manner
- Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with clients, vendors, and event planners to secure repeat business and referrals
- Maintain standard reports and create new ones as needed
- Create Business Development content for NWS social media platforms to market the venue for rentals
- Assist VP-BD with calendar and email communication management
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, Arts Management, or a related field and five to seven years of experience in event sales and management; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Experience in a performing arts center, museum, or similar non-profit venue is highly desirable
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Understanding of event logistics, production requirements, and technical specifications (A/V, lighting, staging) is highly desirable
- Excellent sales, negotiation, and client relationship management skills
- Ability to review and negotiate favorable contracts
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and effectively resolve conflict
- Possess a high degree of organization and attention to detail
- Proficient in event management software, CRM systems, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Fluency in English required; fluency in Spanish desired
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work in-person at the New World Center for meetings and events
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by event schedules
