Position Summary Information Job Summary / Basic Function SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION: The Director of Advising’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing oversight of academic advising services at LIT. This position will supervise and evaluate academic advising professionals and will provide leadership and oversight to the academic advising department and its processes. The Director of Advising works closely with academic advisors, department chairs, faculty advisors, and enrollment specialists to ensure high-quality, student-centered advising. This position will be responsible for delegating tasks within Starfish targeted to boost retention and completion rates. This position reports directly to the AVP of Student Services, and is an exempt level position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for daily operations of the academic advising office.
Supervise academic advising staff.
Provide leadership and vision for academic advising services aligned with the college’s mission and student success initiatives.
Utilize Starfish with caseload management and retention strategies.
Develop and implement advising policies, procedures, and best practices.
Collaborate with faculty, academic departments, and student services to support seamless advising across the student lifecycle.
Oversee compliance with American Disabilities Act and provide support to the Coordinator of Special Populations.
Provide support for Veteran and dependent students receiving VA benefits.
Plan and coordinate the administrative activities of the academic advising department.
Design, administer, coordinate, and assess programs.
Recommend and enforce Lamar Institute of Technology’s (LIT) standards and policies.
Serve as subject matter expert in applicable field and provide guidance to advising staff on complex situations as needed.
Serve as a content area specialist and liaison to other university departments and external constituents.
Recommends and participates in the development of LIT’s policies and procedures; may serve on college planning and policy-making committees.
Identify and disseminate information regarding careers and academic pathways.
Develop and implement advising goals and strategies that align with the strategic goals and mission of the academic unit, college, and university.
Engage in special projects and initiatives to increase and enhance services to students, faculty, and staff.
Support the development and implementation of assessment measures by collecting and analyzing student data to measure outcomes.
Work with colleagues responsible for developing programs and procedures to secure mandated outcomes.
Offer exceptional customer service in a student-centered, professional environment at all times.
Perform related duties as required or deemed necessary to meet the Recruitment goals within the scope of responsibility.
Upholds and agrees to comply with all federal, state, and local requirements pertaining to the security, confidentiality, and privacy of information maintained by LIT, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Evenings and weekends may be required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires the ability to: remain in a stationary position for most of the time; occasionally move about inside an office to access documents, office equipment, etc.; constantly operate a computer or other office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university.
Five (5) years of experience in academic advising in a higher education setting.
Preferred Qualifications PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Five (5) – Eight (8) years of experience providing leadership to an academic advising team.
Experience in community/technical college setting.
Experience integrating the principles of face-to-face, e-advising, individual and group advising experiences into a comprehensive advising program.
Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze and assess data related to student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
Experience with using career inventories, student interest and motivation assessments or other educational planning tools to inform and enhance the advising process.
