Job Summary
The Director of Accounting is responsible for managing the accounting operations of the institution, including general ledger, financial reporting, compliance, and audit coordination. This role ensures accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP and institutional policies. The ideal candidate will have experience working in higher education and proficiency with Ellucian Banner.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Oversee daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and fixed assets
Ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes
Prepare and analyze financial statements and reports for internal and external stakeholders
Manage audit processes and liaise with external auditors
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and institutional financial regulations
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing training and performance evaluations
Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard institutional assets
Work collaboratively with departments across campus to provide financial guidance
Serve as a Banner Finance system expert and resource for reporting and process improvements
Lead implementation of new accounting procedures and system enhancements as needed
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting principles
Proficiency in Ellucian Banner system (Finance module)
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master's degree or CPA preferred)
Minimum 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in higher education
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with nonprofit or governmental fund accounting
Familiarity with GASB standards
Experience working with financial aid and grant accounting
CPA certification or Master's in Accounting/Finance
