New Today

Did you know? By the Dismantling Racism Committee
Juneteenth, our newest national holiday is approaching. Have you heard of Dr. Opal Lee, considered the Grandmother of Juneteenth?
In 2016 at the age of 89, she walked from Ft. Worth, TX to Washington, D.C. conducting 2.5- mile walks in many cities along the way. Her campaign, to convince lawmakers to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday, was finally realized in 2021. Opal Lee has spent her life fighting racial injustice with love and redemption. To quote Dr. Lee, “If people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love.”
Click here to learn about Dr. Lee’s annual 2.5 mile walk on Juneteenth, representing the 2.5 years it took for the Emancipation Proclamation to reach and free enslaved people in Texas.
If you are willing and able, consider joining in by walking, biking, running, or swimming 2.5 miles on June 19th. A summary of her uplifting approach to life can be found here .
Commitment season at Christian Temple. It’s that time of year when we’re dizzy with numbers and budgets and calculations. But really, there’s only one equation that matters: How do we know what we can pay our staff? How do we know we can afford the mortgage? How do we know if we can heat the church through winter and keep it cool in the summer? How do we know whether we can buy enough toilet paper for the bathrooms? The answer is, we don’t…Unless people are willing to pledge. It is indeed wonderful when the church is supported with occasional financial gifts. But unless there are pledges, Christian Temple has no way to plan for expenses. From the critical, like salaries … to the mundane, like bathroom supplies. So if you are one of those generous folks who donates sporadically and knows you will again, please consider making it your commitment to do so. You can help Christian Temple “solve” the upcoming fiscal year. Because pledging makes planning possible! Bible Studies will be held on Zoom from 9 am - 11 am New Study! “Early Christianity: The Experience of the Divine” Wednesday Bible Study Update: Beginning Wednesday, November 20, 2024 and for the following 23 weeks we will begin a new lecture study, “Early Christianity: The Experience of the Divine,” taught by Professor Luke Timothy Johnson from Emory University. In these lectures, you define “religious experience” and study its form in the Roman Empire, Judaism, and early Christianity. A major focus is how early Christians viewed religious experience through Christ’s resurrection and such practices as speaking in tongues in the religion’s first 300 years. I hope you will join us for this new spiritual study into early Christianity’s experience of the Divine. The Wednesday Bible Study is held via Zoom at 9:00 A.M. If you are interested in participating please contact the Church Office for the Zoom link. Although the Farmer’s Market is Year-Round, we will be holding the Wednesday Winter Markets every other week. Christian Temple’s lower lot will be the marketplace for the following dates: April 30 - 10:00 - 12:00 The weekly market begins May 7, and the hours will be 9:00 - 12:00.
