Associate Residency Program Director

The Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at UMass Chan and Memorial Health and in Worcester, MA is recruiting into the role of Associate Residency Program Director for our growing and fully integrated Residency Program of 44 Residents. UMass Memorial Health is the region's Level I Trauma Center and Safety Net Hospital serving a Community of more than 1.5 million Residents. The Associate Program Director reports to the Program Director and assists in the operation of the residency program. The Associate Program Director must dedicate to this role at least the defined % FTE required by the specialty-specific program requirements (using a 40-hour work week unless otherwise stated). Salary support for the Associate Program Director as defined in the ACGME specialty-specific program requirements will be provided. Eligible candidates should have no less than 2 years of clinical experience in Academic Medicine and be board certified in Anesthesiology.

Qualifications of the Associate Program Director must include the following:

  • Requisite expertise and documented educational and administrative experience acceptable to the Residency Review Committee
  • Current certification in the specialty by the corresponding American Board of Medical Specialties, or specialty qualifications that are acceptable to the Review Committee
  • Current medical licensure

Responsibilities of the Associate Program Director include:

  • Assisting the Program Director in overseeing and ensuring the quality of didactic and clinical education in all sites that participate in the program
  • Assisting the Program Director in monitoring resident supervision at all participating sites
  • Assisting the Program Director in developing, implementing and assessing the reliability and validity of evaluation methods
  • Assisting the Program Director in ensuring that departmental clinical quality improvement programs are integrated into the residency program
  • Assisting the Program Director in monitoring resident duty hours, according to Sponsoring Institutional policies, with a frequency sufficient to ensure compliance with ACGME requirements
  • Assisting the Program Director in ensuring that resident schedules do not result in excessive service demands and/or fatigue
  • Assisting the Program Director in monitoring the need for and ensure the provision of back-up support systems when patient care responsibilities are unusually difficult or prolonged
  • Assisting the Program Director in monitoring resident stress, including mental or emotional conditions inhibiting performance or learning, and drug or alcohol related dysfunction
  • Assisting the Program Director in continuing medical education research and scholarly development that would lead to progressive professorial advancement and national recognition in an area of clinical education expertise
  • Attending all residency town hall meetings (if not on vacation or offsite)
  • Being a member of and attending (when not on vacation or offsite) meetings of the following committees:
    • Clinical Competency committee
    • Program Evaluation committee
    • Residency Recruitment committee
  • In collaboration with the Program Director, the Associate Program Director will participate in the mentoring/advising of medical students, up to and including having availability during office hours and writing letters of recommendation

Support for the Associate Program Director includes:

  • A stipend for their role
  • A minimum 0.2 FTE academic time in accordance with ACGME requirements

An academic appointment is awarded commensurate with qualifications and experience.
