TITLE:Associate Director of Accounting - General Fund
REPORTS TO: Controller
DEPARTMENT Accounting Department
STATUS: Regular, Full-Time, Exempt
LOCATION:145 Taylor; Hybrid
WAGE RANGE: $125,800 - $140,600/year
SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Controller, the Associate Director of Accounting - General Fund is responsible for assisting the Controller in managing the General Fund Operations of the Accounting Department as well as overseeing the fiscal management. This position is responsible for the direct supervision of at least 2 accounting staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Oversee and manage the daily operations of the General Fund Accounting, including accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, and financial reporting.
- Prepare and review financial statements (including consolidated financials), ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP, applicable laws, and regulations.
- Develop and implement internal controls, policies, and procedures, to safeguard company assets and ensure adherence to accounting best practices.
- Manage cashflow, monitor banking activities and establish effective relationships with financial institutions.
- Collaborate with external auditors and consultants during financial audits, ensuring the timely completion of necessary audits and filings.
- Prepare any regulatory annual filing, for example form 571-L and others.
- Continuously improve accounting systems, processes, and procedures, to enhance productivity, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Provide leadership and guidance to the accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
- Stay updated on industry standards, accounting regulations and changes in accounting practices, ensuring compliance, and recommending necessary adjustments to accounting policies and procedures.
- Perform other finance department duties that may be assigned by the Controller when appropriate and needed.
Qualifications
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Proficient in managing accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, reconciliations, and financial reporting processes with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Expertise in preparing financial statements that align with GAAP and comply with regulatory standards, ensuring transparency and integrity.
- Skilled in designing and implementing internal controls and accounting policies to minimize financial risks and maintain organizational accountability.
- Experienced in efficiently managing month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely completion and audit readiness.
- Adept at streamlining accounting systems, workflows, and cash flow management to drive continuous improvement and operational efficiency.
- Strong leadership abilities in guiding, mentoring, and developing high-performing accounting teams, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.
- Committed to staying informed on the latest accounting regulations, ensuring compliance, and supporting external audits and regulatory filings.
- Collaborative team player, skilled at working cross-functionally to align financial initiatives with organizational goals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BS/BA in Accounting with 5-7 years accounting experience with progressive supervisory experience.
- Strong understanding of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Knowledge of account analysis and financial statement preparation
- Proficiency in PC based accounting software programs and in spreadsheet (MS Excel) applications. Experience with Yardi, preferred.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work as a member of a team.
- Organized and able to effectively manage multiple projects and duties.
- Demonstrated ability to meet established deadlines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in nonprofit finance, particularly in affordable housing, social services, or community development sectors.
- Understanding of Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) structures, housing subsidy programs, or HUD compliance is a plus.
- Familiarity with nonprofit grant accounting, cost allocations, or funder reporting requirements.
- Experience with industry-relevant systems (e.g., Yardi, Neighborly, HDS) is preferred.
