Associate Director, Energy Engineering Continuous learning, research, and advocacy opportunity with a mission driven company dedicated to shortening the path to carbon neutrality. 2050 Partners is seeking to add an experienced energy engineer to our team primarily to provide program management support for our role in the California Market Transformation Administrator (MTA) program. As an Associate Director, you will support 2050 Partners' MTA responsibilities, including participating on multidisciplinary market transformation initiative (MTI) teams, scoping and overseeing research and analysis in support of technical understanding of the MTI, determining the potential energy savings and total system benefits of the MTI, and coordinating and providing technical oversight across all active MTIs. You will also provide ongoing support as a subject matter expert in the execution of the MTIs as well as market intelligence on technologies and practices for possible future MTIs. Your responsibilities extend to assisting with project management and technical and analytical support for other 2050 Partners projects. Responsibilities Include: Be a trusted advisor to our clients with an emphasis on providing pragmatic advice based on defensible data and analysis Lead all technical/engineering aspects of MTI plan development, planning, and oversight Ensure a consistent and data-driven approach to determining energy savings and cost-effectiveness estimates across MTIs Direct supervision of staff as well as oversight of staff conducting building energy modeling, engineering calculations, time series and other data analysis Plan, scope, and oversee lab and field studies related to MTI technologies Plan, scope, and conduct or oversee building energy modeling to determine energy savings or operating characteristics of MTIs or competing technologies Engage with industry market actors, including manufacturers, national labs, and other program administrators Provide technical support and guidance to the MTA team and subject matter experts; troubleshoot/resolve issues Support compliance with the MTA program rules Support implementation of work activities and technical research for public utilities commissions Required Qualifications and Competencies: Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, environmental, architectural, or related field) is required; higher degree such as a master's or Ph.D can substitute for years of relevant experience; PE a plus 12+ years of engineering or work experience in related area, preferably including consulting and utility energy efficiency program exposure Experience working in the California energy efficiency program and policy environment, including familiarity with CEDARS, California Policy Manual, DEER and CalTF eTRM workpapers, California Cost-effectiveness Tool (CET), and California Avoided Cost Calculators Familiarity with California and national appliance standards and building energy codes, including California Title 20 appliance standards, California Title 24 building energy codes, ASHRAE 90.1, and IECC Familiarity with energy modeling (EnergyPlus) and engineering simulations Desire and ability to work remotely. Committed to primary alignment with West Coast hours, with flexibility to travel for in-person meetings as needed Experience managing client relationships Great initiative, creativity, and curiosity; work well both on your own and as part of a team Experience developing and implementing research, consultant, and implementation projects Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to adapt technical material for broader audiences Strong practical implementation skills Demonstrated ability to write reports, technical papers, and provide technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences Supervision experience as well as oversight of staff and teams conducting energy modeling and technical data analysis Confidence, enthusiasm, humility, and highest ethical standards Desired Qualifications and Competencies: Demonstrated experience conducting avoided cost and time series analysis. Demonstrated experience with energy modeling (EnergyPlus) and engineering simulations. Experience with Python, R, or similar programming languages for data analysis.
