Role of Assistant Technical Director:
The Assistant Technical Director works closely with the Technical Director and scenic designer to review design plans, interpret technical drawings, and clarify build specifications. They assist in developing a detailed build schedule, organizing construction phases, and helping generate a materials list and budget.
Prior to construction, the ATD helps prepare the scene shop, ensuring tools and equipment are safe and accessible. During production, the ATD supervises and participates in the building of scenic elements, ensuring all work adheres to safety protocols and design standards. They teach proper tool usage and shop procedures, assign build tasks to student crew based on skill and experience, and maintain an organized, professional workspace. The ATD also assists with troubleshooting, supports scenic shifts during technical rehearsals, and ensures scenic elements are completed, installed, and finished on time.
After the production, the ATD helps plan and supervise strike, restore the shop to its original condition, inventory tools and materials, and contribute feedback during the post-production review. Throughout the process, the ATD plays a vital role in mentoring student technicians and ensuring a safe, collaborative, and productive working environment.
