The Office of Inclusive Excellence at Whittier College is seeking an Assistant Director, Veteran Student Services & Enrollment.
Reporting dually to the Director of the Office of Inclusive Excellence & The Director of Admissions, the Assistant Director of Veteran Student Services & Enrollment provides leadership, coordination, and direct support for programs and services serving veteran and military-affiliated students at Whittier College. The Assistant Director oversees daily operations of the Veterans Resource Center (VRC), advises student veterans, coordinates veterans’ recruitment initiatives with Admissions, and serves as a secondary School Certifying Official (SCO) in collaboration with the Registrar’s Office. This position blends student support, outreach, and enrollment functions to foster the recruitment, transition, retention, and overall success of veteran and military-affiliated students.

Full Time/Part Time status: Full Time
Salary Range: $70,000 annually; Salary will commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.

Position Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Strategic Leadership & Student Support
Manage daily operations of the Veterans Resource Center (VRC), including hiring, training, and supervising student staff.
Provide individualized advising to veteran and military-affiliated students on academic planning, financial aid, VA benefits, housing, employment, and access to campus/community resources.
Develop and implement programs and services to promote the academic and personal success, retention, and graduation of student veterans.
Serve as a campus resource on veterans’ affairs and advocate for veteran student needs.
Coordinate veteran-focused orientation, transition support programs, and social/community-building events.
Support and advise student veteran organizations (e.g., Poet Warrior Club).
Maintain accurate student records and documentation for reporting and compliance purposes.
Recruitment & Outreach
Partner with Admissions to develop and implement recruitment plans and outreach strategies targeting veteran and military-affiliated students.
Represent Whittier College at veteran-related recruitment events, military base transition programs, and community college transfer fairs, including Camp Pendleton, Naval Base San Diego, and other regional installations.
Build and maintain relationships with military education counselors, community college veteran coordinators, and veteran-serving organizations.
Coordinate campus visits, information sessions, and tours specifically for prospective veteran students and their families.
Engage alumni veterans to serve as ambassadors and mentors for recruitment efforts.
Compliance, Administration, and Collaboration
Serve as a secondary SCO, assisting the Registrar/Lead SCO with enrollment certification and compliance with VA education benefits.
Collaborate with the Registrar, Financial Aid, Business Office, and Student Accounts to ensure accurate billing, receipt, and accounting of VA funds.
Stay current with federal, state, and institutional policies and regulations impacting veteran students by attending training and professional development workshops.
Track and report student veteran outcomes and participate in institutional assessment efforts.
Administer the Ahmanson Grant for Veteran Scholarship Initiatives, preparing reports and helping to steward donor-funded programs.
Collaborate with Student Life, Career Development, Wellness, and other campus partners to provide holistic support and career readiness programming.
Participate in Student Life and campus-wide committees (CARE Team, Bias Response, etc.) as assigned.

Position Specifications & Requirements
Education
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field preferred
Experience
Preferred: 3–5 years of professional experience in student affairs, veterans’ services, admissions/recruitment, or related area
Experience working with military-affiliated students and understanding their unique needs preferred
Veteran experience preferred
Experience with student advising and program development required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of VA education benefits and certification processes
Ability to build strong partnerships internally and externally
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Cultural competence and commitment to inclusive practices
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across departments
Technology
Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience preferred with Ellucian Colleague, Maxient, Slate and VA systems (Enrollment Manager, Ask VA) preferred

Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information
Willingness to complete SCO training within 6 months of hire
