Position Summary:
Virtus Healthcare Staffing is seeking a dynamic and experienced nursing leader for the role of Assistant Director, Surgical Services at our esteemed partner medical facility in Framingham, MA . This pivotal position provides essential leadership and support to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and is responsible for assisting in the overall management of nursing and designated patient care functions within the Surgical Services department. The Assistant Director will play a key role in assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating nursing practice at the unit level within Surgical Services, assuming 24/7 accountability for assigned areas. This leader will be instrumental in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care, fostering clinical staff competency, and managing resources effectively to optimize patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational & Clinical Leadership: Assist the CNO in overseeing the daily operations of Surgical Services units (e.g., Operating Rooms, PACU, Pre-Op, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, as applicable).
Manage and coordinate unit-level activities to ensure efficient patient flow, appropriate staffing, and optimal resource utilization.
Implement and monitor adherence to clinical practice standards, organizational policies, and patient care protocols within Surgical Services.
Ensure a state of continuous survey readiness, maintaining compliance with The Joint Commission, DPH, AORN, and other relevant federal and state regulatory requirements.
Quality, Safety & Performance Improvement: Support the CNO in ensuring high-quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care is consistently delivered.
Participate in and lead unit-based quality improvement initiatives, utilizing data and evidence-based practices to enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
Investigate patient care issues or concerns, implementing corrective actions and process improvements as needed.
Staff Development & Management: Foster a positive and professional work environment, serving as a role model and advocate for the discipline of nursing.
Assist in the recruitment, hiring, orientation, and ongoing development of clinical staff within Surgical Services.
Ensure the competency of clinical staff through education, training, and performance management in collaboration with nurse educators and unit leadership.
Provide coaching, mentorship, and support to charge nurses and staff nurses.
Collaboration & Communication: Maintain highly effective interpersonal and communication skills, fostering strong relationships with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, ancillary departments, and facility leadership.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care pathways and ensure seamless transitions across the care continuum.
Represent Surgical Services in relevant hospital committees and meetings.
Required Qualifications: Education: Academic degree in nursing (Bachelor of Science in Nursing - BSN is strongly implied as a minimum for a leadership role of this nature, or progress towards it).
Licensure: Active and current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of progressive management experience in a hospital environment. This experience must be as a Nurse Manager, full-time Charge Nurse, or a comparable nursing leadership position, preferably within Surgical Services or a related acute care area.
Skills: Proven leadership ability and hospital operational acumen.
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to serve as a role model and advocate for the professional discipline of nursing.
Strong understanding of quality improvement processes, clinical care delivery models, staffing principles, and budgeting concepts.
Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act, The Joint Commission standards, and other pertinent federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) or a related healthcare field.
Specific clinical and leadership experience within Surgical Services (Operating Room, PACU, etc.).
Certification in a relevant specialty (e.g., CNOR, NE-BC).
