About The Department : College Programming and Orientation
Job Summary : The Assistant Director of Pre-Orientation helps to create a stronger sense of community and affinity to the College and the University throughout the students’ college experience, with a particular emphasis on their transition into the University of Chicago. Working closely with the Associate Director of Pre-Orientation, other campus offices, and student planning committees, the Assistant Director leads the development and implementation of various programs including the Chicago Urban Explorers Pre-Orientation, International Pre-Orientation, and the Phoenix Outdoor Program. The role also involves leading communications related to these programs and building ongoing connections with participants to enhance engagement and affinity throughout the year. The Assistant Director will serve on campus-wide committees and manage additional projects as assigned.
Responsibilities
Coordinate logistics for pre-orientation programs, including event registration, travel arrangements, space reservations, catering, vendor negotiations, and supplies procurement.
Manage marketing materials, oversee production and distribution of publications, and coordinate with students and designers for information flow.
Oversee program budgets, communications, outreach, and maintain pre-orientation websites.
Evaluate programs through data tracking, assessments, and assist in planning and growth initiatives.
Maintain participant engagement via ongoing communications and program opportunities.
Recruit, train, and evaluate student staff and leaders, develop training programs, and supervise student directors and interns.
Foster a positive team environment among staff and student leaders.
Contribute to the planning of large-scale events and other projects with campus partners.
Collaborate with various campus offices to plan and execute programs.
Develop activities and initiatives related to student life and community involvement.
Advise and support student organizations and program leaders.
Market programming and evaluate effectiveness.
Perform additional duties as needed.
Education : Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; Master’s degree in higher education or related field preferred.
Work Experience : 2-5 years in a related role.
Technical Skills : Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook; familiarity with Adobe design/web tools; knowledge of student development and event planning; experience with urban student engagement and orientation practices.
Preferred Competencies : Excellent communication, multitasking, attention to detail, relationship-building, initiative, discretion, stress management, critical thinking, and creativity.
Working Conditions : Office setting, some evening/weekend work, physical activities including lifting and walking.
