Brief Description
The Assistant Director of Music Outreach is a member of the larger Office of Programming and Outreach at Luther College. The Assistant Director of Music Outreach develops and promotes a variety of special events to recruit students and garner visibility for the college and the exceptional Luther College Music Department, primarily the suite of Dorian-branded events, including the school year Dorian Festivals, the Dorian Summer Music Camps, and adult-age music reunion/retreat programming. The Assistant Director will contribute to other outreach tasks by leading or planning some music ensemble tours, managing or hosting special concerts and performances on- and/or off-campus, exhibiting at music conferences, and other promotional efforts on behalf of the Music Department.
Brief Description
The Assistant Director of Music Outreach is a member of the larger Office of Programming and Outreach at Luther College. The Assistant Director of Music Outreach develops and promotes a variety of special events to recruit students and garner visibility for the college and the exceptional Luther College Music Department, primarily the suite of Dorian-branded events, including the school year Dorian Festivals, the Dorian Summer Music Camps, and adult-age music reunion/retreat programming. The Assistant Director will contribute to other outreach tasks by leading or planning some music ensemble tours, managing or hosting special concerts and performances on- and/or off-campus, exhibiting at music conferences, and other promotional efforts on behalf of the Music Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversight, planning, management and budgeting for all non-musical aspects of the full suite of Dorian programming and events: festivals, summer camps, and reunions/retreats.
Serve as primary contact between teachers, parents, and Dorian participants for all matters related to festivals, summer camps, and reunions/retreats.
Serve as liaison between Dorian programming and all campus partners, such as festival conductors, Communication division staff, Admissions, Advancement, Facilities, Campus Safety, Residence Life, and Dining Services.
Execute logistics and operations of off-campus music ensemble tours, special concerts and on-campus events sponsored by the Office of Programming and Outreach, as needed.
Collaborate with staff in the Communication division to develop and execute promotional efforts and audience development strategies for the Music Department and for on- and off-campus events, such as social media content and music-specific advertising placements
Update and maintain websites related to Dorian programming and music ensemble tours.
Serve as an ex-officio member of the Music Department Calendar Committee and the Music Department Scholarship Committee.
Collaborate with music department faculty members on continuous strategic and data-driven program improvements that will assist in college recruitment efforts.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise student workers throughout the academic year and especially in conjunction with the series of Dorian Festivals.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:
Education: A four-year college degree is required.
Experience: Experience with Google Workspace and Program or Event Coordination is necessary. Three to four years of music and arts management experience, supervisory experience, and budget management is preferred. Knowledge of and experience with both choral and instrumental music preferred.
Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work with little supervision. Must have strong oral and written communication skills, excellent organizational, public relations and leadership skills, demonstrated ability to manage details and multiple tasks at once, basic accounting skills, and a willingness to travel. Must be able to work flexible and sometimes long hours associated with program and event management.
Ability to travel on music ensemble tours and special events as required to serve as the college’s representative and coordinator.
Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Sedentary work most of the time. Includes exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or the ability to lift, carry, push or pull, or otherwise move objects with a negligible amount of force
Pleasant, smoke-free; air-conditioned in summer, comfortably warm in winter.
