JOB SUMMARY: Working with the Director of Risk and Compliance out of the System Office in Tuscaloosa, this position provides leadership, guidance, and support in establishing and implementing an effective compliance program that addresses regulatory requirements applicable to a comprehensive research university and medical system. This is a hands-on position that liaises with a broad range of university and healthcare professionals in a decentralized environment across the System's entities and must exhibit independence and objectivity in reviewing and evaluating compliance policy, programs, processes, activities, and reported issues or concerns. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Coordinate and Support Compliance Functions: Assist in supporting and monitoring the necessary activities for fostering and maintaining a culture of compliance across the System and all its institutions. Assist in coordination of campus and health system compliance functions and promote active communication and consistency across the System regarding compliance matters. Provide insight and counsel to the Director of Risk and Compliance, the Chief Compliance Officer, and the Chancellor on compliance-related matters. Conduct Compliance Risk Assessments: Assist in coordination of enterprise risk assessments for the System Office and all system institutions in areas relating to compliance risk. Develop and conduct compliance risk assessments as needed for more in-depth analysis of compliance issues. Support Policy Development and Management: Assist in the review system-wide policy submissions and compare against system board resolutions and federal and state regulations for compliance in coordination with the Board Rule 108 System Office designee. Compliance Systems Administration: Oversee and manage the operations of the System Ethics Hotline, including maintaining relationship with software vendor(s), tracking and reviewing incoming incident reports, supporting the identification of escalation cases or cases that are an immediate security or safety risk. Oversee and manage the conflict-of-interest (COI) database, including software updates, coordinating annual COI filings of trustees, senior leadership, and financial signatories, evaluating COI considerations for trustee meetings and actions, and support related use of the software by the campuses and affiliated entities. Training and Educational Support: Support training and educational efforts in support of the System's compliance and risk management goals, including the development, tracking and monitoring of System Office employee training, planning and hosting of the annual UAS Risk and Compliance Conference, and planning and hosting the monthly virtual Risk and Compliance Academy for personnel in the UA System, as well as planning and hosting other educational programs as needed. The position may be required to perform other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES No supervisory responsibilities MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree or higher in relevant field from an accredited university Minimum of 5 years of experience in compliance or a related field Familiarity with broadly accepted compliance frameworks Preferred Qualifications Master's degree Compliance certification or other related credentials (CCEP, CHRC, LPEC, ARM, etc.) Experience in higher education Experience in health care KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of compliance functions and coordination, including assessing compliance risks and implementing compliance frameworks Ability to develop and deliver high quality training and educational programs in a variety of mediums to achieve compliance goals and meet requirements Compliance systems administration skills to oversee and manage the operations of the System Ethics Hotline, including vender relationship and incident tracking and reporting, and the System Conflict of Interest reporting database, including software updates, annual filings, and evaluation of COI considerations. Communication and collaboration abilities to support campus and health system compliance functions and to develop and promote the compliance function for the System Office, in concert with Risk Management, Internal Audit, Office of Counsel, Human Resources, the academic affairs and financial offices. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Sedentary Work: involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. WORKING ENVIRONMENT The Assistant Director of Compliance will work primarily on-site at the UA System Office in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with occasional travel to other campuses or locations as required.
