The Assistant Director for Multimodal Transportation Initiatives and Sustainability is a strategic leader within the University of Maryland's Department of Transportation Services (DOTS), responsible for shaping and advancing the university's sustainable, people-centered transportation network. This position oversees all aspects of micromobility, including bicycles, e-scooters, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and commuter benefits, while leading major initiatives in infrastructure planning, compliance, behavior change, and institutional sustainability. A primary goal of this position is to make the University of Maryland a national model for micromobility excellence and bicycle advocacy, integrating environmental goals, safety, equity, and long-range planning into a cohesive, campus-wide vision. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of DOTS, supervises two full-time staff and up to ten student employees, and serves on the department's senior leadership team. It requires collaboration with Environmental Safety, Sustainability, and Risk (ESSR), UMPD, Facilities Management, University Health Center, and regional partners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for all micromobility services, active transportation planning, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Serve as the university's chief cycling advocate, advancing a safe, inclusive, and bike-friendly culture.
  • Lead commuter benefit programs and transportation demand strategies to promote sustainable travel options.
  • Oversee EV charging infrastructure and align transportation sustainability efforts with UMD's Climate Action Plan.
  • Develop and implement high-impact safety and education initiatives, such as bike safety clinics and multilingual outreach campaigns, to enhance campus-wide awareness and adoption of micromobility.
  • Contribute to departmental strategy, policy development, and cross-campus planning as a senior leader.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Seven (7) years of professional experience in transportation, planning, sustainability, or operations. Two (2) years of experience supervising or managing professional staff.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Knowledge of micromobility trends, bicycle planning best practices, and sustainable transportation models.

Skill in planning and project management, including experience with capital projects, circulation planning, and design coordination.

Skill in communication, outreach, and presentation, with the ability to translate data and plans into actionable programs.

Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.

Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments. Ability to lead cross-departmental initiatives and collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
