Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.

Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Director of Disability Services, the Assistant Director supports the development, implementation, and assessment of the department's vision and mission, and is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations and services, including CART, Books in Alternative Format, Notetaking, Accommodated Testing, and Otter.ai license management.
This position supervises a team of professional and support staff and maintains a caseload of students, providing intake, accommodation planning, and case management. As a campus-wide resource, the Assistant Director collaborates with faculty, staff, and administrators to implement accommodations and resolve accessibility concerns, with particular oversight of the law school's accommodated exam process.
The Assistant Director also partners with the Director and fellow Assistant Director to develop and deliver training programs, presentations, and campus initiatives aimed at increasing disability awareness and promoting inclusive practices. This position requires strong knowledge of disability laws, experience in student support and supervision, and a demonstrated commitment to fostering an accessible and inclusive campus environment.
Responsibilities
Department Leadership and Supervision
- Assist the Director in developing, implementing, and assessing the vision and mission of the Disability Services (DS) office.
- Oversee the daily operations and service delivery of key DS programs, including CART, Books in Alternative Format, Notetaking, Accommodated Testing, and management of Otter.ai licenses.
- Supervise department personnel, including an Administrative Assistant, ADA Testing Coordinator, two Specialists, and a Department Assistant.
- Maintain a caseload of students and serve as a central point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and parents regarding disability-related access issues across campus.
- Support the University's compliance with federal, state, and local non-discrimination laws related to disability, including the ADA and Section 504.
Student Support and Case Management
- Conduct intake and follow-up meetings with students with disabilities to assess eligibility and determine appropriate academic accommodations.
- Interpret psychoeducational evaluations, diagnostic reports, and medical documentation related to learning, psychological, medical, and physical disabilities.
- Provide coaching and guidance to students on academic strategies, self-advocacy, and effective use of campus resources.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with FERPA, ADA, and university policies.
- Serve as the primary contact for accommodated law school exams, ensuring exam integrity, anonymity, and accessibility in collaboration with law school administration.
Faculty and Campus Collaboration
- Work closely with faculty and academic departments to implement accommodations and address issues related to instructional accessibility.
- Serve as a subject-matter expert on ADA compliance, instructional design, and inclusive teaching practices.
- Participate on the University's Student Outreach and Support (SOS) Team and other multidisciplinary groups addressing student needs.
- Consult with Residence Life on disability-related housing accommodations and serve on related campus committees.
Training, Outreach, and Institutional Engagement
- Partner with the Director and fellow Assistant Director to develop and implement programs, class presentations, and workshops that promote disability awareness and increase training opportunities across campus.
- Provide consultation and guidance to students, faculty, and staff on accessibility in academics, programs, events, and physical spaces.
- Design and deliver presentations, workshops, and training sessions on disability-related topics, legal compliance, universal design, and inclusive practices.
- Develop and implement educational initiatives to increase awareness and promote campus-wide understanding of disability access and inclusion.
- Advise student organizations focused on disability advocacy, education, and community engagement.
- Contribute actively to campus accessibility initiatives
Professional Development and Compliance
- Stay informed on legal, regulatory, and best practice developments related to disability services through ongoing professional development.
- Maintain active membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., AHEAD, NASPA, NACADA) and engage with the broader disability services community.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Special Education, Higher Education, Educational Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, disability services, or a related area.
- Demonstrated expertise in interpreting disability documentation and developing individualized accommodation plans.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state disability laws, including the ADA, Section 504, and FERPA.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex and sensitive information clearly and professionally.
- Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality and manage student records in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations and across all levels of an institution.
- Ability to analyze complex situations, exercise sound judgment, and provide creative, compliant solutions.
- High level of initiative and ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with database management systems and assistive technologies.
- Demonstrated commitment to access, equity, and inclusion in a higher education setting.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience supervising full-time professional staff, student employees, or interns.
- Demonstrated success in managing department operations, including service delivery coordination and resource allocation.
- Experience supporting students in graduate, law, or professional schools with complex accommodation needs.
- Proven ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and institutional disability laws and policies in a higher education environment.
- Experience developing and delivering training on disability access, universal design, and inclusive practices to faculty and staff.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
- Demonstrated experience engaging in collaborative problem-solving and conflict resolution related to accommodation implementation.
- Familiarity with case management databases (e.g., AIM, Accommodate) and student record-keeping systems.
