WLRH 89.3 FM, North Alabamas public radio station, is seeking a News Director / Morning Show Host to lead our local news operation and anchor our new locally focused morning program. This hybrid role blends editorial leadership, on-air hosting, and digital-first innovation to deliver smart, relevant, and engaging content across broadcast, web, social media, and emerging platforms.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about public service journalism, have an ear for compelling storytelling, a strong on-air presence, and demonstrate a proven ability to inspire and manage a team. This position sets the tone for WLRHs news coverage and ensures our journalism reflects and connects the diverse communities of North Alabama.
What Youll Do
Lead WLRHs local news coverage Direct daily news operations, assign and edit stories, and uphold editorial standards.
Host and co-produce WLRHs morning show (59 AM) Deliver local news, interviews, weather, traffic, arts, and human-interest segments.
Manage newsroom staff Supervise and mentor reporters, producers, and interns; foster an inclusive and collaborative culture.
Drive digital innovation Expand WLRHs presence across web, social media, and on-demand audio; collaborate on podcasts and multimedia features.
Engage with the community Cultivate relationships with local leaders, experts, and partner organizations.
Support station initiatives Deliver sponsorship credits, station promotions, and fundraising messages in a warm, conversational style.
Required Experience and Skills
Bachelors degree in journalism, communications, or related field (or equivalent experience)
Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills
Experience producing news or spoken-word content across platforms
Experience launching or hosting a live news/talk program
Strong on-air performance and comfort with live hosting
Ability to analyze audience metrics and adapt strategies
Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills
Proficiency in audio/video editing software (Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, etc.)
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or related software
Comfort with audience engagement tools (e.g., call-ins, app messages, social media integration)
Knowledge of digital publishing tools and CMS platforms
Preferred Experience and Skills
Familiarity with North Alabama communities (or willingness to learn)
Familiarity with public media values, standards, and FCC rules
Photography and basic video production skills
