Workers Compensation & Risk Management Director
The Workers Compensation and Risk Management Director is responsible for leading the strategy, execution, and continuous improvement of the company's workers' compensation and insurance liability programs across a multi-state workforce.
This role ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, manages insurance carrier and vendor relationships, and provides responsive support for employees and leaders navigating claims. As a key leader within Human Resources, this position plays a vital role in reducing organizational risk, containing costs, and promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and recovery.
Essential Functions & Requirements:
Workers' Compensation
Serves as the Company's primary subject matter expert for all workers' compensation matters, managing the full claim lifecycle-from incident reporting and investigation to resolution
Ensures compliance with Federal and State workers' compensation laws (with emphasis on high-claim states such as California and New York)
Partners with internal stakeholders (Operations, Safety, Legal, HR) and external vendors (TPAs, insurers, and medical providers) to drive timely and cost-effective claim outcomes
Leads and improves return-to-work and modified duty programs that enable safe and efficient employee reintegration
Tracks, analyzes, and reports on claim trends to identify opportunities for cost containment, safety enhancements, and process improvements
Provides training and tools for leaders and HR teams on reporting requirements, claims protocols, and injury management best practices
Auto & Risk Management
Oversees the Company's insurance programs, including claims management associated with vehicle incidents, third party claims, and environmental events
Partners with insurers, brokers, and legal counsel to ensure effective claims resolution, risk mitigation, and compliance
Leads insurance policy renewal and negotiations to secure favorable rates and coverage terms
Monitors and evaluates loss trends related to safety programs, training, and preventive measures
Serves as a resource for leaders and employees on risk management policies tied to company assets and insurance coverage
Provides executive leadership with strategic insights on insurance markets, claims costs, and risk exposure
Education:
Bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, risk management, occupational health or related field (preferred)
Experience:
7+ years of progressive experience in workers' compensation and/or risk management, with exposure to multi-state claims handling (required)
Experience managing insurance liability claims, insurance negotiations, and vendor partnerships (required)
Experience partnering with TPAs, insurers, and internal stakeholders to resolve complex cases (required)
Strong knowledge and experience working with workers' compensation laws and insurance programs (required), specifically in complex states like California, New York, Texas, and Florida (preferred)
