What You Will Do The W78 Systems Engineering (W-3) Group is seeking a Project-Program Director 5 to serve as both Group Leader and Warhead Manager for the W78 Nuclear Weapon System at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership and line management of the group, as well as overall program planning, development, and execution in support of the nation's stockpile stewardship mission. Key Responsibilities: Leadership of W-3 group staff, including technical direction and career development. Long-range program and budget planning, justification, and integration with other program elements. Oversight of War Reserve (WR) production, surveillance, Joint Test Assembly (JTA) production, Significant Finding Investigation (SFI) closures, and WR warhead sustainability. Leadership of W78 Annual Assessment activities. Ensuring execution of program reviews, earned value reporting, and risk-informed project management. Fostering a collaborative and respectful work environment that supports teaming, learning, and delivery of mission outcomes. This role serves as LANL's official representative to the Air Force Project Officers' Group (POG) and interfaces regularly with counterparts across the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the Department of Defense (DoD). The candidate will provide strategic technical leadership across the full scope of W78 activities, including physics, engineering, production, surveillance, and technology development. Frequent travel may be required to support programmatic needs. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Leadership: Expert-level knowledge and demonstrated capability and experience in technical leadership and program management, including success in program development, program advocacy, strategic planning, resource allocation, earned value reporting, technical program execution, and negotiation. Demonstrated management experience leading people and projects to include extensive budget management and HR performance management experience. Demonstrated commitment to Laboratory goals in assuring the health and safety of workers and the public, environmental protection, workforce diversity, and employee development. Demonstrated commitment to Laboratory goals of operational leadership, assuring the security of classified information, assuring the health and safety of workers the public and environment, work force diversity and employee development. Teamwork: Excellent interpersonal communication skills both oral and written, including the ability to promote teamwork and resolve conflicts. Demonstrated successful teamwork and consensus building consistent with appropriate delegation and recognition of others. Demonstrated ability to team, collaborate, or integrate across program lines to accomplish larger program goals. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with representatives from multiple organizations and at all organizational levels. Nuclear Weapon Systems: Record of professionally recognized accomplishments and demonstrated expertise in a major technical element, component or subsystem of nuclear weapons, Demonstrated successful leadership of technical projects and personnel. A solid understanding of nuclear physics principles. Education/Experience : Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: An MS in mechanical, aerospace, or related engineering field, is preferred. Familiar with issues and challenges related to the W78 warhead. Demonstrated experience interacting with one or more NSE Production Agency's. Experience interacting with and presenting to upper level LANL management, NNSA and US Air Force (or comparable) customers. Experience working directly with NNSA and communicating budget requirements, scope requirements, milestone reporting, and program review processes and deliverables. Knowledge of Air Force Project Officer's Group structure, subcommittees and functions. Knowledge of NNSA structure. Experience in successful personnel and resource management. Derivative Classifier (DC) experience. Active Q clearance, or ability to obtain an Active Q clearance.
