Overview The Virology (HIV) Regional Medical Scientific Director is a credentialed therapeutic and disease area expert (MD, PhD, DNP, or PharmD) who engages in scientific exchange and research support with external scientific leaders and investigators. The RMSD provides balanced, factual scientific information about non-product areas of interest and responds to scientific questions from external leaders. They develop peer-level relationships with scientific leaders and investigators, support data generation activities for sponsor trials and investigator-initiated programs as prioritized by R&D leadership, and represent R&D at scientific meetings. They report to the Regional RMSD Team Leader within US Medical Affairs, Global Clinical Development, and R&D.
Responsibilities Identify, establish and manage collaborative relationships with national, regional and clinical practice scientific leaders and investigators to address scientific needs and provide access to medical and scientific information on therapeutic areas and data/products.
Conduct peer-level scientific discussions and remain a reliable contact for Research and Development (R&D) and Medical Affairs.
Engage in proactive non-product discussions on disease states, diagnosis, epidemiology, unmet medical need, and population health to inform R&D/ GMA and HH strategy and research programs.
Facilitate appropriate scientific exchange with scientific leaders, integrating knowledge with actionable insights to inform R&D and HH strategies.
Communicate external stakeholder opinions and data trends to Medical Affairs HQ to inform internal R&D strategies.
Represent R&D at scientific meetings and contribute to debriefs, insights, and post-congress reports.
Develop and execute territory plans aligned with global Virology strategy.
Support data generation activities when requested by R&D leadership, acting as liaison to investigators for investigator-initiated research (IIS).
Identify potential investigators for phase II/III programs and provide scientific support for sponsored trials as needed.
Provide in-depth scientific support to Health Systems teams within USMA.
Maintain in-depth knowledge of the assigned disease/therapeutic areas through educational efforts, including attendance at conferences and review of key journals; fully comply with company policies, laws, regulations and ethical standards.
Education Minimum Requirement An advanced degree (MD, PhD, DNP or PharmD) relevant to Virology and requirements of the position.
Experience - Minimum Requirements A minimum of 3 years in the biotech/pharmaceutical or healthcare environment.
A minimum of 3 years of clinical and/or research experience (beyond terminal degree) in Virology/HIV (or related area) with demonstrated scientific excellence.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, networking and presentation skills.
Ability to travel up to 50% with overnight stays and reside in the coverage region.
Skills Required Deep therapeutic competence in Virology; up-to-date with trends and new information.
Ability to network and partner with external customers including scientific leaders, investigators and academic institutions, within permissible guidelines.
Ability to consolidate and understand complex data sets, plan/execute analyses, summarize data, and interpret results.
Knowledge of national guidelines, clinical research processes, FDA regulations, and ethical guidelines (HIPAA, OIG) relevant to the pharmaceutical industry and external stakeholders.
Organizational skills to manage shifting priorities and a dynamic environment.
Preferred Capabilities Recognition for scientific excellence in Virology with sustained contributions in clinical, academic or translational/basic science research.
Experience in both clinical Virology and independent research/publications; desirable experience in late-stage clinical research and investigator-initiated trials.
5+ years of prior pharmaceutical industry experience in Virology (MSL or similar).
Existing relationships within the coverage region with Virology stakeholders.
Leadership ability and initiative to address challenges within scope of authority.
Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Remote work with headquarters in Upper Gwynedd, PA; candidate should reside within the coverage region.
