SOI Qualified Archaeologist / Field Director

Job Summary: Environmental Research Group, LLC (ERG) seeks an Archaeologist / Field Director to join our team for upcoming cultural resource management projects located in the greater Mojave Desert region, the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, and the greater Southern California area. The primary responsibilities will include conducting pedestrian surveys and shovel test excavations to identify and document archaeological resources. These projects are anticipated to start Fall of 2025 with anticipated ongoing work and potential for promotion to regular, full-time status.
ERG is seeking candidates based out of California, Arizona or Nevada. Please note that this job is being posted to multiple cities and applying for one job posting is sufficient.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as Field Director - oversee and direct the work of Archaeological Field Technicians
Conduct systematic pedestrian surveys to identify archaeological materials
Perform shovel test excavations according to project protocols
Record filed observations including soil profiles, artifact descriptions, and site conditions
Collect and record archaeological data, artifacts, and materials for subsequent analysis and interpretation
Complete standardized field forms, notes, and sketch maps accurately
Use GPS units and tablets to document field data
Adhere to all safety protocols and company policies while working in the field
Coordinate with Project Manager on schedule logistics and deliverables
Work collaboratively with crew members, project managers and other stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to meet or exceed the following elements:
Graduate degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or equivalent discipline
Secretary of Interior Qualified
Ability to pass background check
At least 3 years of experience in a Field Director/supervisory role directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified above
Familiarity with standard field equipment such as GPS, compass, shovel and trowel
Ability to conduct strenuous fieldwork in various environmental conditions, including heat and rugged terrain
Experience with artifact analysis (historic artifacts, lithics, and other archaeological materials, and/or other specialties a plus)
Ability to stay at lodging near the project site
Reliable transportation and valid driver's license
Effective communication and teamwork skills
Archaeological experience in California (required) with Oregon and Washington experience highly preferred
Pay & Benefits:
This is an hourly position with a base rate of pay of $32 to $38 per hour commensurate with experience plus health and welfare stipend when applicable. Per diem will also be provided.
