Overview Senior Editor and Director of Publications, Arlington, VA — Full-time The Charlotte Lozier Institute is the 501(c)(3) research and education institute of the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, dedicated to electing candidates and pursuing policies to reduce and end abortion. CLI provides pro-life groups and policymakers with research-based information on issues including abortion, women’s health, prenatal diagnosis and treatment for the unborn, perinatal hospice, abortion reporting, sex-selection abortion, stem cell research and medicine, and health care policy. CLI has a network of more than 70 Associate Scholars across disciplines. The Senior Editor and Director of Publications (SEDP) is responsible for editing and approving internal and external CLI publications on topics in science and statistics. The SEDP tracks documents through all stages of approval and may oversee peer-reviewed articles, research papers, CLI website content, expert testimonies, opinion pieces, fact sheets, and other publications, whether online or in print. The SEDP ensures quality control to keep CLI publications fully sourced and aligned with the organization’s mission and tone. The SEDP may also create commentary/articles based on relevant research in response to external developments. This is a full-time position that reports directly to the executive director of CLI. Responsibilities Have subject matter familiarity with a variety of life/bioethics issues and policy analysis materials related to these issues. Have strong editorial skills and apply/enforce CLI standards style guide. Direct web editors and research assistants engaged in editorial functions for CLI websites and designated publishing projects. Possess in-depth knowledge of core CLI issues (e.g., abortion, stem cell research, pregnancy centers and other services, adoption, reporting laws, statistics, health care policy). Analyze policy processes and entities involved in these processes. Write and present research and policy analysis for external audiences in the form of commentary, op-eds, or articles. Be familiar with research tools (internet, databases, archives, university collections, government agencies, and other resources related to CLI areas of interest). Analyze research reports, assess quality of research studies, and discuss basic issues in research approaches, particularly as related to proposals presented to CLI. Work collaboratively to secure access to research information and share ideas for improvement. Assess the relevance of research studies and materials to CLI’s work. Manage publications workflow and processes within and between related nonprofit organizations. Understand nonprofit requirements for exempt activity and fundraising, accounting, and reporting. Schedule and guide multiple projects simultaneously, assessing priorities and follow-up actions. Familiarize with the Employee Handbook, office procedures, and internal policies to ensure smooth operations at CLI and its subprojects. Participate in CLI meetings, including policy discussions, research planning, offsites, and weekly tactical/executive check-ins. Edit blogs, editorials, and other material as assigned. Communicate with CLI Associate Scholars, writers, and other personnel. Oversee organization of CLI publications, fact sheets, data, and information documents. Occasionally procure research materials, books, supplies, and other work materials for the Institute, as needed. Qualifications Master’s degree or higher in public policy, bioethics, science, sociology or similar. High-quality editing and writing skills. Minimum of five years’ experience in nonprofit administration and organization. (Previous supervisory experience a plus) Facility with web management or editing via WordPress or similar. Ability to work with other professionals in a team environment to achieve consensus goals and improve systems among related organizations; highly organized and deadline-oriented. Familiarity with editorial standards for various institute communications. Experience working with outside scholars/experts on academic research and projects. Supervisory Responsibility This position supervises Deputy Editor and Senior Research Associate and occasional outside contract editors. Hours 40 hours per week. Weekend and overnight work is not expected. Travel Occasional travel may be required for this position up to 5% of the time.
