Job Description

Founded in 1936, the National Wildlife Federation has grown into America's largest and most trusted grassroots conservation organization with 52 state/territorial affiliates and more than six million members and supporters, including hunters, anglers, gardeners, birders, hikers, campers, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and stripes. The mission of the National Wildlife Federation is to unite all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in our rapidly changing world. We advance this mission through programming focused on conserving wildlife, restoring habitats and waterways, expanding outdoor opportunities, connecting children with nature, advancing environmental justice, and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.

To support our mission, we are seeking a Sr. Director of Marketing to join our Ranger Rick Outreach team in Reston, VA or remote. This strategic, hands-on leader will drive revenue growth for Ranger Rick Brands—including magazine subscriptions and book clubs—through multi-channel marketing and sales campaigns. Reporting to the VP of Ranger Rick Brands and Engagement, this role is part of the Ranger Rick leadership team, oversees a team of three, and manages key external vendors and partners.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES (major areas of responsibility):

Leadership and Budget Management

  • Lead the development and execution of strategic marketing plans to drive acquisition, renewal, and auxiliary revenue streams across all Ranger Rick products.
  • Direct the team to create compelling go-to market pricing, offers, and bundles for magazine subscriptions, book clubs, and new products that increase net revenues in alignment with broader team and organizational goals.
  • Develop and manage marketing, sales, and new business operations, including steering the marketing budget and individual business line P&Ls.
  • Deliver weekly, monthly, annual and ad hoc reporting on marketing campaign performance, orders, source and channel attribution, trends, and conversion rates, in order to provide inputs that guide modeling, reprojects, forecasting, and scenario planning.
  • In coordination with legal and security teams, conduct routine assessments of lead generation, customer acquisition, customer renewals, promotions, and customer database management to ensure data security, integrity, and accuracy.
  • Approach all new and existing business channels and sources with the steadfast mindset of efficiently optimizing or reducing expenses and increasing net revenues.

Collaboration and Team Building

  • Manage and mentor a three-person marketing team, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Ranger Rick Outreach Production, Fulfillment, Customer Service, and Editorial teams, as well as other departments across NWF, including Licensing, Legal, Finance, Security, Education, Cause Marketing, Digital Engagement, Membership, and more.
  • Foster strong cross-functional collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver high-performing campaigns and initiatives.
  • Cultivate a team culture rooted in respect, collaboration, communication, mission focus, and innovation.

Channel Marketing and Campaign Strategy

  • Oversee the marketing team’s calendar, including the planning, implementation, and analysis of all campaigns, strategies and tactics, including but not limited to direct mail, web, digital, agency, and newsstand.
  • Lead the team and vendors to enact continuous creative testing and campaign optimization for channel-specific, audience-driven approaches that maximize ROI and performance.

Vendor and Partner Management

  • Build strong relationships and serve as primary liaison for vendors, partners, agencies, and affiliates to ensure collaborative execution.
  • Oversee contracts, calendars, and performance metrics for external marketing service providers.
  • Proof and approve all creative marketing, sales, and promotions materials (print and digital), ensuring alignment with brand standards, campaign goals, and organizational values.
  • Review detailed financial, sales, order, and business reporting with attention to detail to spot and resolve errors.
  • Oversee the team and vendor to maintain and grow the customer retention strategy, sustaining high renewal rates and successful upsell and step up programs to maximize revenues, reduce attrition, and improve customer trust and loyalty.

Innovation and Growth

  • Identify and evaluate new business opportunities and revenue-generating partnerships, including sponsorship, product expansion, and cause marketing collaborations.
  • Oversee the website shop and order pages, ensuring a seamless user experience while guiding the team to conduct robust lead generation, product marketing, and conversion rate improvements.
  • Provide competitive analysis in the children's magazine market and across relevant children’s brands that intersect to nature, environmental science and education, the outdoors, or wildlife conservation.

Mission and Impact

  • Harness mission-driven marketing strategies to inspire parents, families, and caregivers to gift Ranger Rick publications to children—nurturing a love for nature and a lifelong commitment to wildlife conservation.
  • Support the organization’s equity and justice goals and build inclusive marketing practices and partnerships that expand Ranger Rick’s impact across diverse communities.
