The ACLU seeks a full-time Senior Director, Human Resources in the Human Resources department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role with in-office requirements of two days per week or eight days per month.
The Senior Director is a vital member of the senior leadership team and provides strategic leadership for core HR functions and systems, including benefits administration (health, wellness, and retirement), compensation, policies, legal compliance, internal budget and procurement management, and HRIS/HR Data Analytics. The department focuses on delivering a best-in-class employee experience across the entire lifecycle, including onboarding, learning and development, and ongoing employee engagement. The position coordinates with other HR leaders to ensure DEI-centered practices across core HR administration.
Two labor unions represent a portion of the ACLU employee base: United Auto Workers (UAW), Local 2110, and Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) (ACLU Staff United). This represents 67% of the total ACLU employee base.
Your Day to Day Lead and manage a team of 4-5 dedicated to core HR functions: benefits administration, classification and compensation, policies and legal compliance, internal budget and procurement management, and HRIS/HR Data Analytics.
Oversee units responsible for employee life cycle processes; develop systems to enhance operational efficiency and accountability.
Provide policy and procedural guidance to staff and leadership; stay informed on federal and state labor laws to ensure compliance and minimize risk.
Develop and manage departmental budget in collaboration with the Chief Human Resources Officer; advise on organization-wide staff investments; authorize invoices and payments; prepare analyses and reports.
Oversee a $10 million benefits and wellness budget and program administration, ensuring legal compliance with applicable laws (e.g., ERISA).
Support National Board retirement matters; advise on retirement and related topics as needed.
Act as a strategic partner to the Chief Human Resources Officer on a range of matters.
Total Rewards & Benefits Administration Serve as in-house expert on retirement and benefits plans (pension, 401(k), health, life, disability, and ancillary benefits) for National and Affiliate employees.
Oversee defined benefit pension plan, three defined contribution plans, and one non-qualified retirement plan with assets around $175 million and ~2,000 participants.
Assist with compensation program administration and external analyses to maintain equity and consistency.
Oversee employee leave plans and accommodations (FMLA, ADA).
Assess and improve benefits offerings; conduct benchmarking with peers; advise senior management on enhancements.
Guide Affiliate personnel on benefits plans and compliance matters.
Oversee telework/remote work policy and temporary staffing requests via external payroll.
Classification, Compensation, And HR Administration Oversee classification and compensation processes, including position reviews and job descriptions.
Manage headcount and advise on position allocations during budget cycles.
Assess job descriptions and alignment with priorities; advise on compensation levels.
Negotiate vendors/contracts, including contingent workers; oversee volunteer staff administration.
Develop and manage annual HR budget; oversee HR-related procurement and contracts; ensure internal financial controls and audits.
Compliance & Employee Relations Oversee compliance matters and manage regulatory reporting; support audit preparations; handle I-9, FLSA, NLRB matters; maintain records.
Collaborate with CHRO and Talent Management leadership on employee relations, total compensation, policy, and data analytics matters.
Prepare confidential personnel data and analyses for sensitive employee matters.

Preferred Qualifications PHR, SPHR or other HR certifications.
Experience supervising a diverse, multi-generational workforce and in an advocacy environment is desirable.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, HRIS databases, and HCM systems.
Advanced degree in HR Management, Business Management, or related field is preferred.
Compensation The annual salary for this position is $242,314 (Level C1), based in New York, NY, with regional adjustments if working outside the listed location. Details on pay structure are available at the ACLU Careers site.
