Purpose of Position
The Senior Director of Development will lead, plan, develop, manage, and implement annual and multi-year strategies to grow the financial support of United Way. This position provides professional leadership to staff, serves as a member of the Resource Development Leadership Team, and works closely with Board and Resource Development volunteers, including Campaign Cabinet and Donor Network groups. It also interfaces with leaders across the Dane County business community with an overall goal to drive partnerships and deepen relationships.
Key Responsibilities
35% Strategy / Annual Workplace Campaign
Oversee the annual campaign, raising $18M+ in revenue from 500+ corporate partners.
Manage a portfolio of 1-3 top-tier corporate partner accounts.
Collaborate with Resource Development Leadership staff to set team priorities and initiate strategic and operational plans including the annual goal setting and campaign projection management
Oversight of recognition program and strategies (e.g. including thank you letters, events) and ongoing stewardship.
Coordinate with Individual and Major Gifts Senior Director and staff to establish strategic goal setting within the corporate campaign sectors and divisions related to donor networks including Tocqueville Society, Lead United, Women United and LINC
Foster a relationship-based culture and model a customer-service orientation in all interactions.
Collaborate across teams to ensure timely and effective communication of program outcomes to volunteers and donors.
Develop and execute yearly work plans for assigned campaign responsibilities.
Communicate anticipated outcomes and results to internal and external stakeholders.
25% Leadership and Supervision Support Vice President on department priorities as a member of the department leadership team.
Lead and oversee the Workplace Campaign team within the Resource Development Department on the planning and execution of the annual corporate giving campaigns.
Supervise, coach, evaluate and report on the activities of the Workplace Development Team, both Directors and Program Managers, and their ongoing job responsibilities, including goal setting, professional development, and performance reviews.
Set and maintain direct report fundraising portfolios.
Collaborate with Resource Development Operations team on the Loaned Executive Program to recruit and train individuals, oversee portfolio assignments, and monitor and evaluate the program's process and results.
Develop and maintain responsibility for the administration of the RD department budgets in conjunction with Vice President, Resource Development.
Foster a culture of equity, innovation, teamwork, excellence and well-being.
Attract, retain and inspire a diverse, mission-driven team committed to United Way's values.
20% Data Management Work with Resource Development and Technology Services teams on campaign data and reporting and database management.
In coordination with Technology Services monitor the department data integrity and reporting systems.
Work with Technology Services to develop reports and dashboards for campaign monitoring and efficient project management to ensure department accountability towards revenue plan goals.
15% Volunteer Engagement Support Vice President to develop, lead and coordinate Cabinet Leadership and Cabinet Workplan.
Develop meaningful roles for volunteers and ensure strong staff support, training and recognition.
Lead fundraising volunteer identification, recruitment (Campaign Cabinet, leadership giving committees, Board), placement, training, and recognition with staff involvement, building United Way relationships across the community.
Develop and implement strategies in conjunction with Corporate & Community Engagement Team.
Ensure that volunteer engagement extends the organizational brand, reach, and financial support for the organization while aligned with organizational priorities.
Lead training and communications with Workplace Employee Campaign Managers across corporate campaigns.
Represent United Way of Dane County in the community in a professional and effective manner including service clubs and organizations.
Make public presentations to employees of companies, community service organizations and as otherwise requested by the public.
5% Support of Overall Organization: As part of the Resource Development leadership team, participate in program development and overall leadership of the organization.
Participate in organizational planning, strategy, program development and relevant activities.
Actively participate in at least one United Way internal committee.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in business management, marketing, social sciences or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. Master's degree preferred.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
Strong ability to think strategically, analyze data, and translate insights into actionable plans.
Proven track record in motivating and leading both volunteers and staff to achieve organizational goals.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and create an inclusive work environment.
Excellent organizational and time-management abilities to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Strong team orientation with a demonstrated ability to inspire, organize, and manage teams at all levels, including staff, external partners, and volunteers.
Ability to handle sensitive information with the utmost discretion and professionalism.
Strong planning and project management skills with a focus on precision and outcomes.
Minimum Experience Minimum of three years of experience in fundraising or sales efforts, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
Minimum of three years of supervisory experience with a demonstrated ability to provide coaching, development and performance feedback and management.
Minimum three years experience in fund development, relationship-building and donor engagement strategies.
Proven success in strategic planning, executing donor engagement strategies and leading staff to meet goals.
Demonstrated ability to work with data to inform decisions, manage projects and facilitate meetings.
Demonstrated ability and experience in the development and implementation of Project and Talent Management.
Strong ability to cultivate and maintain productive, positive relationships through an open, friendly and inclusive environment.
Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Microsoft 365, Word, Excel), with the ability to learn new client data management systems and platforms.
Work Schedule, Location, and Travel Requirements Full-time, salaried position (40 hours/week); FLSA Exempt.
Core hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., with flexibility required for early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays based on organizational needs.
Primary work location is the Anderson United Way Center; hybrid/remote work eligibility is subject to the guidelines in the Employee Handbook.
Local travel within Dane County is required for meetings, events, and community engagements; reliable transportation is necessary.
Salary Range
$64,100- 84,600 (based on experience). In addition to a competitive salary, we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, vision, dental, life, and disability insurance. United Way contributes 8% of gross wages to a defined contribution plan, which becomes fully vested after 5 years of employment. Employees also have the option to contribute to a 403(b) plan. Furthermore, we provide generous paid time off, including vacation, sick, and personal days, as well as 10 paid holidays each year.
