Overview Psychiatry Residency Program Director - Clinical Assistant/Associate or Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences (Clinician Educator) at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC). The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Keck School of Medicine at USC is accepting applications for the position of Psychiatry Residency Program Director. This full-time Clinician-Educator position is available at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor, reporting directly to the Chair and Vice Chair for Education, and indirectly to the GME and ACGME. Description of the Psychiatry Residency Program The Psychiatry Residency program is a 4-year, ACGME-accredited program co-sponsored by Los Angeles General Medical Center (LAGMC) and USC. The program recruits approximately 1000 applications for 12 intern slots per year. The mission is to train psychiatrists who are clinical experts and leaders in care of complex, underserved, ethnically diverse, urban patient populations through supervised and mentored experiences across diverse clinical settings. Primary training sites include LAGMC, the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Hospital, Keck Hospital of USC, and USC student mental health center. Residents engage in teaching and supervision of medical students and complete scholarly projects as part of training. In the last academic year, 18 residents gave national presentations and/or received national awards or fellowships. Graduates pursue careers in academia, public sector, and private practice. Description of the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences The mission of the department is to care for and protect the mental health of our communities, and to drive innovative mental health care through learning and discovery. The department focuses on clinical care, education, and research, with collaborations across local, national, and international partners. It supports clinical services at LAGMC, USC Student Health, and Keck Medicine of USC, including Keck Hospital of USC, USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, and USC Care Medical Group. Responsibilities of the Program Director Direction and oversight of the educational curriculum and program compliance with ACGME standards, including curriculum development, trainee evaluation and feedback, policy development, duty hour monitoring, trainee wellness, and assessment of clinical competency. Approximately 60% administrative time and 40% clinical effort, contingent upon overall percent effort of program and associate program directors. Operational oversight of clinical rotations, didactics, assessment, advising, psychotherapy training, research, and scholarship. Lead mission-driven recruitment and selection of residents. Oversee residents’ comprehensive clinical educational experience. Create and engage in high-quality educational programs. Strategic planning and development in graduate medical education. Oversee resident well-being, inclusion, and belonging. Oversee resident recruitment, orientation, training, duty hours, and evaluations. Ensure operational compliance with ACGME standards of curriculum, trainee competency, evaluation and feedback, and policy development and implementation. Serve as a national leader for innovative training models in psychiatric education. Coordinate with clinical leadership across affiliate training sites to ensure compliance. Provide clinical services and direct supervision of residents within a clinical site as needed. Attend Department Grand Rounds, Social Justice Forums, and Department Matters meetings; provide periodic service-specific Grand Rounds. Represent the Department and residency program on committees and at meetings as appropriate. Participate in annual faculty merit review and mid-year performance evaluations. Collaborate with clinical and research division leaders to embed high-quality, innovative clinical and scholarly activities in the residency training program. Other projects and duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications MD or related degree; board certified in general psychiatry and eligible for California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board. Three (3) or more years of psychiatry education program leadership, administration, and teaching in an ACGME-accredited training program. Demonstrated outstanding academic accomplishments and trajectory including innovative educational program development, excellence in teaching, clinical leadership, or research. Multicultural competency in working with patients of color, patients from diverse economic backgrounds, LGBTQIA2S+ patients, and international patients. Preferred Qualifications Ability to work effectively in a highly diverse and multicultural patient population and LGBTQIA2S+-affirmative environment.
