Salary Information: The anticipated salary for this position will be in the range of $65,000.00-75,000.00, with consideration for negotiation based on experience and education. About Riverside Riverside Presbyterian Church, PC(USA), a vibrant, large, affirming, and diverse Matthew 25 congregation located in the historic Five Points neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, seeks a full-time Director of Music Ministries & Organist to grow its music ministry. The Director of Music Ministries and Organist should demonstrate a superior level of organ proficiency and conducting skills. He or she also should possess superior skills in worship planning, hymn playing, liturgical improvisation, solo organ repertoire and performance, and choral conducting/accompanying, with a focus on continuing the growth of our music ministry, as outlined in the attached Job Description. While we are a congregation who values traditional worship styles, the ideal candidate for this position will be comfortable developing and leading repertoire from varied periods and traditions and working with church members of all musical abilities. The candidate must demonstrate their understanding that worship is not a performance, but a carefully created expression of praise directed to God and work toward the overall vision of the church. Director of Music Ministries & Organist Riverside Presbyterian Church Full- Time (min. 40 hours per week) Exempt, Salaried Work Location – Hybrid (Required Physical Attendance with some Remote Ability) Position Supervised by Senior Pastor/Head of Staff Direct Reports – No employees – contract staff singers only Essential Duties/Responsibilities · Coordinate music for worship services to include preparation of choir and selection and scheduling/coordination of other musicians such as soloists, ensembles, and additional musicians for worship services. · Provide leadership for the growth and formation of current and new musical ensembles, with an emphasis on programs for children and youth. · Collaborate with Riverside Presbyterian Day School (RPDS) in conjunction with its weekly RPDS Chapel services (Thursdays 8:00 am), and its annual graduation services (*substitution is permitted at Chapel services with proper advance notice, generally not to exceed three (3) services per semester). · Collaborate with the pastoral staff to select service music, anthems, and hymns in accordance with the liturgical calendar, and to further collaborate with church staff to effectively present worship services and similar events in a livestream format. · Proficiently play organ / piano for all worship services. · Engage and coordinate with contract singers to be used, as necessary, to include monitoring of individual participation, maintenance of contracts as approved by the church, and requisition of monthly call costs, within applicable budget allocation. · Collaborate with staff and families to develop appropriate musical selections for weddings and funerals, subject to a right of first refusal if requests are made for other musicians to play (*substitution permitted with proper advance notice). · Supervise and work with church staff and volunteers to develop various music programs of the church including, for example, the handbell choir and special community concert events presented by the church (Examples: July 4 Patriotic Concert, Shiver on The River, etc.). · Participate in presenting and publicizing community concerts in coordination with the Communication Committee. · Design and manage the annual music budget in cooperation with the Worship Council, including overseeing the music library and the purchase of new music. · Coordinate ongoing maintenance of all instruments used in worship, consisting primarily of organ and piano(s), with assistance from Handbell Choir regarding any handbell maintenance. · Coordinate appropriate scheduling and use of organ for any individuals desiring to use the organ for practice or performance. · Serve on the Worship Council and attend weekly staff meetings. Qualifications Character: maintains a Christ-centered faith, a strong sense of humility, and a pastoral identity. Organization: has a desire to work collaboratively with the pastors, staff, and RPC members; has strong communication and organizational skills. Musicality: has extensive knowledge of organ and choral repertoire, ranging from early church music to modern compositions; ability and desire to play in a multitude of genres and styles. Education and Experience Education: Candidate should hold a bachelor’s or advanced degree in sacred music/organ/voice (choral) or closely related field, and/ or hold AGO Certification. Proficient organ performance is a mandatory and essential function of this position. Candidates should have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Director of Music Ministries or similar position and be able to demonstrate an appropriate record of growing a church music program both in size and number of musical offerings. Candidate should have experience in sacred music, organ performance, and choral conducting, including experience in a variety of worship styles. Physical Demands – While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use his/her hands and feet and is required to talk and hear. This position is frequently required to stand, sit, and walk. Specific vision abilities required of this position include close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. This position may be required to lift 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds rarely. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
