Overview Library Director – Shreve Memorial Library (LA)
The Shreve Memorial Library (LA) Board of Control seeks an experienced library leader to shape the library’s future as its next Library Director. Shreve Memorial Library operates 22 physical locations (21 branches and an administrative center), a mobile library, and a staff of 154 full-time equivalents. The library serves Caddo Parish (population over 240,000) and hosts large-scale annual events such as Author Faires, the Children’s Book Festival, and One Book One Parish, while partnering with community organizations to contribute services to events like ArtBreak. Key initiatives include fostering an inclusive staff culture, implementing a recently drafted technology plan, executing a system-wide capital improvement plan, building on existing community partnerships, and creating new connections to expand opportunities for users to dream, discover, and do.
Shreveport, the state’s third-largest city in northwest Louisiana, serves as the hub for education, business, and culture in the Ark-La-Tex region. It sits at the crossroads of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, and extends into Bossier Parish and Bossier City. Shreveport offers theaters, museums, local cuisine, casinos, and year-round festivals such as Mudbug Madness Cajun Festival, Mardi Gras parades, and Red River Revel Arts Festival. Nearby higher education institutions include Centenary College, LSU Shreveport, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana Baptist University, Bossier Parish Community College, and Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College.
Responsibilities Direct the operations of the 21-branch library system.
Develop and recommend library policies to the library board of control.
Play a leading role in tax elections, bond issues, and other funding initiatives.
Manage a detailed budget and communicate fiduciary needs to the board.
Develop the overall vision, goals, and objectives of the library.
Be heavily involved in capital programs.
Analyze and improve the library’s public services, facilities, technology, staff development, and report current methods and trends to the board.
Make decisions concerning personnel, application of policies, and maintenance of facilities, systems, and grounds.
Represent the library in the community and at governmental and professional organizational meetings.
Cultivate a courteous, competent, customer-focused environment welcoming to the public.

Compensation The hiring salary range is $100,000 – $140,000 (placement negotiable depending on experience and qualifications) with an excellent fringe benefits package.

Qualifications MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) or MLS (Master of Library Science) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution.
At least five years of full-time professional experience with increasing responsibility, including at least two years in an administrative capacity (e.g., director of a medium-sized library system or assistant/associate director of a large library system).
Certification by the Louisiana Board of Library Examiners or ability to attain certification within the first year of employment.
Good driving record with no DWI violations in the past five years and no other moving violations in the past year.
