The Institute for Therapeutic Innovation (ITI) is a leading academic organization dedicated to advancing research in infectious diseases, with a particular focus on identifying new and life-changing therapies to reduce patient mortality and morbidity. The institute is located at the UF Research and Academic Center at Lake Nona (Orlando, FL), a 110,000 sq. ft. facility, with ITI occupying 15,000 sq. ft. of state-of-the-art laboratory space dedicated to infectious disease research. ITI s mission is to foster groundbreaking scientific discoveries that improve public health outcomes and combat the growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance.

We are seeking a dynamic, visionary, and highly skilled Director to lead the institute and guide our efforts in revolutionizing antimicrobial drug research. For more than a decade, we have achieved this by combining world-class applied science with cutting-edge mathematical analysis.
ITI has studied a wide variety of pathogens, including pathogenic viruses, nosocomial pathogens, and Tier 1 Select Agents.

Position Summary:
The Director of the Institute for Therapeutic Innovation will oversee the institute s strategic direction, scientific vision, and day-to-day operations. This leadership role includes setting research priorities, cultivating a collaborative environment for interdisciplinary teams, securing funding, and ensuring the institute s objectives align with global health needs. The Director will work closely with government agencies, industry partners, and academic collaborators to advance innovative research in antimicrobial resistance and drug discovery.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Vision -

• Develop and execute the strategic plan for the institute, aligning research goals with emerging global health challenges related to infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
• Ensure the institute is recognized as a global leader in infectious disease research, particularly in antimicrobial development and optimization.
• Foster a culture of innovation, scientific excellence, and collaborative, interdisciplinary research.

Research Oversight -

• Lead and support a diverse team of scientists in conducting high-impact research projects aimed at the development and optimization of new and existing antimicrobial drugs and therapies.
• Establish clear research priorities and guide the direction of scientific inquiries to ensure alignment with public health needs.
• Ensure principal investigators (PIs) have the necessary resources to achieve their goals. Promote the use of cutting-edge technology, high-quality laboratory facilities, and state-of-the-art methodologies.

Funding & Resource Management -

• Manage the institute s budget and resources efficiently, ensuring the sustainable growth of its research programs.
• Identify and secure funding opportunities, including government grants, private sector partnerships, philanthropic contributions, and industry collaborations.
• Oversee the development and management of multi-million-dollar research grants and contracts.

Collaboration & Partnership -

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with academic institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and industry partners to support collaborative research and translational science.
• Represent the institute at scientific conferences, academic forums, policy discussions, and with stakeholders across sectors.
• Encourage and facilitate collaborations with hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and global research institutions to advance the institute s mission.

Academic & Administrative Leadership -

• Lead the recruitment, training, and professional development of faculty, researchers, and staff, fostering a motivated and diverse workforce.
• Oversee academic programming and contribute to the institute s educational mission, including the mentorship of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scientists.
• Ensure all research activities comply with ethical standards, institutional protocols, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

• PhD, MD, or equivalent advanced degree in microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, infectious diseases, or a related field.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in academic research, including at least 5 years in a leadership role managing large research teams or programs.
• A proven track record of leading successful research initiatives in infectious diseases, especially in the discovery or development of antimicrobial agents.
• Strong understanding of the global challenges surrounding antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease therapeutics.
• Demonstrated success in securing research funding from public and private sectors, including grant writing and industry partnerships.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage a wide range of stakeholders, including academic, government, and industry leaders.
• Experience with strategic planning, budget management, and data-driven decision-making in a fast-paced research environment.
