About the Role The University Writing Center employs peer-consultants to provide writing tutorial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students, in person and online. The Assistant Director does not primarily teach; the role focuses on tutor training and overseeing writing consultants. The Assistant Director may be the instructor of record for a special credit-bearing course and provides professional development sessions related to writing, writing instruction, digital writing/composing, and document design for faculty and students.
Responsibilities Consultant Supervision – 60%: supervise day-to-day work of the University Writing Center (UWC) and Online Writing Lab (OWL); develop and revise consultant schedules for onsite and OWL operations; coordinate with faculty to arrange in-class workshops; address questions from faculty and staff; develop web-based materials for UWP/UWC/OWL.
Staff Development and Evaluation: assist the UWC Director with staff development, weekly meetings, and preparation of consultants to lead UWC and classroom-based writing consultations; assist with observation and evaluation of consultants; collaborate on improvements to OWL for Distance Education.
Student Consultation: consult with students in onsite and online sessions about writing concerns to stay current in writing center practices.
Campus Outreach 20%: develop and conduct workshops in the Digital Studio; support outside programs and projects (e.g., dorm tutoring, community engagement); explore funding for innovative writing and tutoring projects; collaborate on grant writing and data collection and reporting.
Scholarship 10%: stay current in scholarship and research on writing, writing centers, tutor training, and digital composing; participate in local, regional, and national writing center conferences; author or contribute to related publications when feasible.
Leadership 10%: demonstrate leadership to improve UWC, OWL, and UWP; represent the programs on university committees as appropriate.
Qualifications Minimum Education/Experience: MA in English or related field (e.g., rhetoric/composition or writing studies) from an accredited institution.
License or Certification: None
Preferred Experience/Skills: Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric; 3 years of writing center experience including administrative experience; online writing lab experience; knowledge of administration theories and practices; proficiency in online instruction for writing; strong written and verbal communication skills.
