Position Information Position Title Gallery Director/Curator FLSA Classification EX Reports to Dean, HAS Salary Range E Weeks Per Year 52 Work Week 40 hours (minimum) Position Summary Assumes responsibility for directing the daily operations of the Joseloff and Silpe art galleries, the Kaman Print Center, as well as curating and presenting regional and national exhibitions which promote the mission of the galleries and the Hartford Art School. Performs all duties in full support of the University’s mission, understanding that the positive and effective execution of these duties is instrumental to the education of the University’s students. Hiring Range Budgeted starting salary is $58,024 to $70,000, depending upon experience Key Responsibilities Key Responsibilities Actively pursues applicable grant, fundraising and other development opportunities for the galleries. Creates and maintains gallery exhibition budgets in an effort to ensure prudent fiscal management. Maintains financial records, including tracking of expenditures as well as the recording of income. Oversees the requisition of equipment and materials as well as payment to outside contractors, vendors and suppliers. Creates budget activity and other applicable financial reports upon request.
Establishes, cultivates and maintains effecting working relationships with the Office of Marketing and Communication in the development of publicity and other relevant gallery communications which comply with University branding standards including, but not limited to, essays, press information, catalogue essays, text and other exhibition-related materials. Publicizes gallery events online via the gallery website, local events listings, social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and other local artist websites. Maintains active distribution and mailing lists to ensure the integrity of information.
Oversees subcontracted labor employed by the galleries to prepare spaces including, but not limited to, wall construction, painting, floor refurnishing, installation and de-installation of artwork. Obtains quotes for costs and fees for vendors as necessary and/or appropriate.
Oversees the initiation and processing of purchase orders, requests for checks and other employment documentation. Hires, trains and supervises student gallery monitors, interns and part-time art installers.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Represents the galleries and the University internally and externally as necessary and/or appropriate. Attends meetings with artists, collectors and prospective donors. Provides tours to students, trustees, artists and other museum and gallery professionals. Provides quality customer service to all visitors of the galleries and at openings and events.
