Summary
The Underwriting Training Director serves as the strategic leader responsible for designing, delivering, and optimizing underwriting training that elevates the technical proficiency, consistency, and decision-making capabilities of the underwriting department. This role plays a critical role in equipping underwriters with the necessary knowledge of medical, financial, and non-medical risk assessment, which ensuring compliance with internal policies, industry regulations, and reinsurance guidelines. The Underwriting Training Director will lead a team of training professionals and work closely with underwriting leadership, operations, medical, claims, compliance, legal, reinsurance partners, and the broader Learning & Development in the organization. This individual will also collaborate closely with the Quality Assurance Director to align training with QA findings, enhancing the feedback loop and driving continuous underwriting excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and lead a comprehensive underwriting training strategy that supports onboarding, Trainee program, continued education, career progression, and leadership development
Design, implement, and refine training programs that enhance underwriters’ proficiency in medical, financial, and non-medical risk assessment, ensuring alignment with company philosophy and risk tolerance
Collaborate with Underwriting leadership, operations, medical, claims, compliance, legal, and reinsurance partners to ensure training content is current and aligned with evolving business needs and regulations
Lead and mentor the Underwriting Training team, providing direction, support, and performance oversight to ensure high-quality program execution
Leverage feedback from the Quality Assurance Director and underwriting audits to identify training gaps, improve underwriting decision quality and integrate findings into training content and delivery strategies
Incorporate diverse learning formats to support multiple learning styles
Utilize date and analytics to assess training effectiveness, measure learning outcomes, and continuously improve training methodologies
Maintain strong industry knowledge by staying current on underwriting trends, emerging risks, and advances in digital and accelerated underwriting tools
Partner with Learning & Development and other teams to align training initiatives with broader organizational learning goals and ensure consistency in instructional design best practices
Collaborate in a team-oriented environment
May be responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations as directed by Senior Vice President, Operations and Vice President, Chief Underwriter
This position is preferred onsite/hybrid with the expectation that you are in the office three days per week with current campus days being Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (subject to change with advance notification and manager discretion)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree
10-15 years of life underwriting experience; preferred background would include designations such as FALU, FLMI, or other course work within ALU, LOMA or similar industry organizations
3-5 years leadership experience
Minimum 5 years training experience
Experience in signing-off on large cases exceeding five million in face amount
Previous experience with accelerated and rules engine underwriting
Must be able to communicate in an effective manner, both verbal and written
Demonstrated skill in developing risk management and underwriting programs

The base compensation range represents the low and high end of the range for this position. Actual compensation will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience. The range listed is just one component of our total compensation package for employees.
Other rewards may include an annual bonus, quarterly bonuses, commissions, and other long-term incentive compensation, depending on the position.
