The Director, Underwriting will be responsible for reviewing preliminary credit packages for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loan opportunities with a focus on Small Balance loans as defined by the agencies. Candidates are expected to have experience with both Fannie Mae Small Loan and Freddie Mac – SBL programs. The Screening Manager must demonstrate strong communication and writing skills, attention to details, organizational skills, and analytical ability. The Screening Manager must take the initiative to review credit packages, understand and apply Agency lending program requirements, communicate effectively with Agency production, and ability to move multifamily financing opportunities forward to underwriting. While working in an independent and reliable manner, teamwork and effective communication will also be necessary for success.
The Director, Underwriting will work directly with the Chief Underwriter and Deputy Chief Underwriter(s), Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Origination and Analyst staff to efficiently and effectively manage production pipeline in order to increase loan volume while maintaining and building LUMENT’s reputation in the marketplace and making sound lending decisions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Review multifamily (including MHC) screening packages for approval and submission to Agencies.
Ensure compliance with Agency guidelines and standards.
Analyze historical financial statements, rent rolls, and property operations.
Analyze estimated underwritten income and expense projections.
Review supporting documentation for markets, valuations, and loan analysis.
Review borrower/sponsor financial statements, SREO, credit reports, and organizational structures.
Analyze the creditworthiness of the sponsorship and the real estate and provide concise risks and mitigants/recommendations
It is expected that all materials will be quickly and accurately analyzed and such data will be reviewed to identify key underwriting issues and potential transaction risks
Work diligently to control the quality of proposed loans, provide thoughtful, critical analysis, and assure that such analysis is properly documented
Identify and prepare all program waivers/exceptions and other documentation for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as required
Ensure final analysis is documented accurately and files are complete, accurate, and compliant.
Assist the Deputy Chief Underwriters and credit team as needed.
Work professionally and harmoniously with team and coworkers.
Other projects and duties as assigned.
Contacts
This position has frequent contact with all levels of employees and management. In addition, this role interacts with outside business partners, vendors, consultants, and other office visitors.
Education, Skills & Experience
Required
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Economics, Real Estate, or other related fields from an accredited college/university.
At least 10 years previous work experience with analyzing/ underwriting multifamily loans in a commercial real estate lending environment required
At least 5-10 years direct experience with Fannie Mae and/or Freddie Mac small loan multifamily underwriting is required.
Highly analytical thinking with demonstrated talent for identifying, scrutinizing, improving, and streamlining complex work processes.
Results-driven achiever with exemplary planning and organizational skills, along with a high degree of attention to detail.
Exceptional listener and communicator who effectively conveys information verbally and in writing.
Resourceful team player who excels at building trusting relationships with clients and colleagues.

Applicable Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
