Purpose of Position
To develop and implement AdvaMed’s state government relations program in assigned states by working with member company representatives, AdvaMed staff, and consultants to plan, develop, and implement advocacy strategies to influence policy issues. To serve as a liaison to regional groups, support area member retention and prospect recruiting, and promote regional events. Primary purpose (90%) of position is state advocacy, with additional duties related to supporting membership development, events, and revenue.
Essential Duties of Position
- Actively engages on specific legislation and rulemaking, that both negatively and positively impacts the medical technology industry, with state officials and staff by participating in meetings, submitting letters, and providing oral testimony, as appropriate
- Develops advocacy materials, including background papers, letters, testimony, and calls-to-action, in collaboration with Public Affairs, and uses internal policy expertise to ensure continuity of policy positions
- Collaborates with third-party allies as assigned or appropriate
- Tracks state legislation through an online database, regular communication with members, and regular monitoring of state legislative and regulatory websites
- Interfaces regularly with any assigned policy or sector specific AdvaMed work streams to incorporate opportunities for promotion or awareness of priorities and activity at the state level
- Communicates effectively with members through legislative updates, regular work group calls, and other communication modalities and can prioritize urgency of issues and level of communication needed for each
- Cultivates relationships with state lawmakers, staff, and regulators in assigned states to advance AdvaMed’s priority issues as well as develop and implement strategies that educate them on value of medical technology
- Supervises and manages activities of retained lobbyists and other consultants
- Acts as an ambassador for AdvaMed and assists with business development, new member recruiting, member retention, and promotion of AdvaMed Purchasing Group as appropriate
- Attends and actively participates events hosted by state-based organizations of which AdvaMed is a sponsor or engages with
- Attends national and regional conferences to represent AdvaMed both for policy, political, relationship-building purposes
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of state- legislative and regulatory processes required, with preference given to those with knowledge of medical technology industry and ecosystem
- Ability to develop strategic plans for accomplishing state legislative and regulatory priorities
- Excellent written and verbal presentation skills
- Exceptional ability to present to working groups and build trust and collaboration
- Exceptional ability to analyze complex issues and develop public policy proposals
- Ability to persuade others and build consensus with senior level government officials
- Ability to handle and navigate conflict
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with state policymakers
- Knowledge of electronic research methodologies
- Excellent organizational and analytic skills
- Proficient in the use of relevant Microsoft Office Suite software
Specifications
- Minimum Education Required: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in political science
- Minimum Experience Required: 6+ years lobbying experience; 3+ years’ experience in state government relations with a company or trade association
- Travel Required: Up to 30%, Domestic
