The Position
Reporting to the hospital’s CNO, The Director of Surgical Services directs and supervises functions and activities in the Surgery Department and implements and interprets policies, procedures, standards, and regulations for team members, patients, medical staff, and the public. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Ensuring compliance with Joint Commission standards
Managing, coaching, and guiding department employees
Assisting in the development of Surgery Department goals and objectives
Collaborating with senior leadership on department budgets and ensuring the department operates within budget
Preparing periodic reports for the CNO relating to departmental objectives and performance
Developing policies and procedures designed to ensure appropriate and cooperative functioning within the nursing department
Preparing work schedules, assigning personnel, evaluating work performance, and making recommendations for personnel actions
Maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement activates, safety, environmental and infection control standards
Organizing, directing, and coordinating functions and activities in Surgical Services
Provides direct patient care, when needed, evaluating outcomes, consulting with other specialties as required and adjusting nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care
Adjusting staffing to meet needs and provide for adequate coverage of the unit
Providing performance feedback supporting employee development through self-appraisal and formal supervisor appraisal of performance
Maintaining responsibility for identifying and initiating necessary actions to resolve problems
Encouraging collaboration and teamwork
Monitoring the productivity of the department and efficiency of staff
Performing other duties as assigned or requested
The Successful Candidate
The Director of Surgical Services will possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to play a key role in the clinical leadership of this health system. These competencies include, but are not limited to, the following:
2+ years of supervisory level experience in a hospital-based surgical services
BSN and active, unencumbered RN license in the State of Louisiana
Master’s degree preferred
Current BLS and ability to obtain ACLS and PALS certification within 9 months of hire
In-depth knowledge of best practices and compliance standards for hospital-based surgical services
Proficiency with MS Office and common web applications
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent leadership skills
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with physicians, leaders, and other team members at all levels of the organization
Exceptional problem-solving skills
