Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is currently seeking a talented professional for the role of a Director of Strategic Initiatives. Habitat Capital (HCap) has been a nationally certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) since 2017. HCap is a wholly owned entity of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI or Habitat) and was created to serve our more than 1,000 US-based Habitat affiliates by providing an array of financial services and products to support their work as affordable mortgage originators, real estate developers, homebuilders, sellers, and partners for housing and community solutions. To date, HFHI and HCap have provided over $400MM in capital to its US domestic affiliate network via enterprise-level, secured project-level, bridge and structured financing for affordable housing and community development projects as well NMTC allocation for homeownership initiatives. Additionally, HCap seeks to develop and provide permanent mortgage financing products. HCap values creativity and flexibility in developing financial products for our customers and working with capital partners who share our mission.
The Director of Strategic Initiatives will provide support and thought partnership to the Executive Director of HCap to further the goals of Habitat Capital and maximize impact and innovation. This role will lead the efforts to create frameworks to innovate HCap’s work and support the ED in efforts to improve the work of Habitat Capital. The Director of Strategic Initiatives will oversee special projects, lead board of directors’ engagement and support, and support in the general operations of HCap. This role will lead efforts to identify and cultivate internal and external partnerships that can support HCap’s work and potential in the field.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership support and Operations (50%)
- Provide general support and thought partnership to the Executive Director and HCap operations
- Lead on board of directors and advisory board support, as well as external partners and funders as needed
- Lead integration of equity as a driving principle in our work and ensure alignment across HCap workstreams
- Manage recurring team and interdepartmental meetings
Strategic Initiatives/ Special Projects (30%)
- Lead and implement special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned by the ED of HCap.
- Design and support the implementation of feedback loop that includes integrating end user/homeowner voices and input into HCap approach and strategy
- Manage and cultivate internal and cross department partnerships to deepen impact
Innovation (20%)
- Identify and spearhead innovative approaches to HCap’s work to maximize impact on potential homeowners who are the most vulnerable
- Cultivate and support external partnerships to ensure HCap’s work is driving a national conversation around the role of CDFIs impact on affordable housing and equity
Key Requirements:
Masters degree in relevant field or equivalent professional or educational experience
10+ years of non-profit or related experience working at the intersection of impact investing, social justice and/or equity
5+ years of progressively responsible management experience, including managing teams
Focus on and commitment to equitable and inclusive programs benefiting low-income communities preferred
Hands on experience with supporting and leading non-profit management
Ability to build and sustain excellent processes and implement equity-focused programming
Strong problem-solving, project management, and organizational skills including ability to prioritize decision making
Ability to effectively manage a growing, diverse, and remote team
Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to represent HFHI’s mission and work in internal and external forums
Commitment to and experience with mission-driven lending in diverse, low- and moderate-income communities; commitment to demonstrating values of diversity, equity and inclusion through portfolio outcomes
Willingness and ability to travel up to 30%

- Experience both implementing programming geared toward low-income communities and supporting organizations at the national level
The actual salary offered for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including location, internal equity and the candidate’s qualifications and professional experience. HFHI offers a competitive, comprehensive benefits package that varies by country and typically includes vacation leave, sick leave, personal days, health insurance options, retirement plan contributions and life insurance. For work locations in the US, the hiring range for this position is $116,030 - $136,500.
