Qualifications: Strong background in administrative/organizational responsibilities Distinguished record of serving students, parents/guardians and community Impeccable communication skills Consummate team-player Proven record of creating and sustaining collaborative partnerships Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of special education programs and services Director of Special Education Essential Functions: Effectively direct the Special Education Department with a staff of approximately 100 and a budget of over $8,000,000 in all aspects including oversight of personnel and programs, strategic planning and program development, budget, and internal and external departmental relationships. Serve as liaison for special education matters between the State Department of Education, the ISD and local constituent districts Ensure departmental compliance with all special education guidelines, rules and regulations Other Duties and Responsibilities as assigned. Qualification Requirements:

Education and Experience: Master's degree or higher Possess all required certifications for Michigan Director of Special Education and School Administrator At least five years of successful special education teaching experience
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid Michigan driver's license and good driving record required.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to compose and write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from various groups including administrators, staff, local school districts within the county, and the general public.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to frame and solve a practical problem logically and rationally. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in a variety of forms (written, oral, diagram or schedule).
Other Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of organizational systems, the role of public education in the United States, and special education laws and practices. Strong law understanding. Ability to collaborate with families and community members of varying cultural and educational backgrounds. Ability to manage personnel and programs. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Problem solving skills. Knowledge of curriculum and research-based programming. Knowledge of Michigan and federal education laws/regulations and district policies. Ability to make independent judgments. Ability to keep and maintain accurate records and to meet deadlines. Must be organized and dependable. Must work well within given time and cost constraints. Must respect and maintain confidentiality. Must carry-out all responsibilities with awareness of all requirements and standards established by the Board of Education.

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to use fingers, tools, or controls. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside an office setting; however, may be required to visit classrooms as needed. The noise level in the work environment is moderate but may vary within classroom settings.

Employment Date, Salary, and Fringe Benefits:
This is a 52-week position. Director salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. Start date will be determined upon hire. This position will have the option to participate in health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurances, as well as generous paid time off.
