Direct message the job poster from Staffing Science Director of Software Engineering (E-Commerce) Full-time • On-site, 5 days/week • Phoenix, AZ (local candidates only) ***Must be able to contribute as a hands-on leader while managing a small team*** The Opportunity We’re seeking a hands-on Director of Software Engineering to own the architecture and delivery of our next-generation e-commerce platform while leading and mentoring a team of six engineers (web, mobile, and QA). You’ll drive technical strategy, champion best practices in performance & scalability, and guide our migration to a payment solution that’s flexible and provider-agnostic. What You’ll Do Lead architecture and platform modernization for a high-volume e-commerce site, re-architecting for performance, scalability, and maintainability. Evaluate and implement a new payments provider with a more agnostic and flexible setup to support future growth. Oversee and mentor a team of 6 engineers , setting clear expectations, conducting code reviews, and fostering technical excellence. Drive technical decisions related to integrations with ERP, CRM, OMS, analytics, and other 3rd-party systems. Collaborate with Product, Marketing, and Data teams to improve buyer journey, site speed, and conversion funnel performance. Analyze and act on performance metrics , user behavior, and A/B test results to continuously optimize checkout and transaction flows. Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of new features, enhancements, and platform upgrades. Champion engineering best practices , including CI/CD, automated testing, and documentation. Communicate roadmap progress and architectural direction to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders. Foster a collaborative, high-trust, in-person engineering culture , supporting growth, learning, and accountability. Tech Environment Mobile: React Native (iOS & Android) Infrastructure: AWS, Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) Must-Have Qualifications 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience with 3+ years in a leadership role (manager or director). Proven track record architecting high-traffic e-commerce or payment-centric platforms (>10k transactions/month). Deep expertise in performance tuning, horizontal scaling, and payment gateway integrations (Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, etc.). Experience delivering and supporting mobile e-commerce apps (preferably React Native). Strong understanding of conversion rate optimization , buyer psychology, and analytics-driven decision making. Demonstrated success mentoring engineers, conducting architecture reviews, and guiding refactors. Residence within 30 miles of Phoenix HQ —daily onsite collaboration is essential for our culture and long-term retention. Steady employment history with notable tenure (we value builders who stick around and scale with us). Nice-to-Haves Prior migration from monolithic to microservice or headless commerce architectures. Knowledge of AWS Serverless (Lambda, DynamoDB), GraphQL, or MACH-based commerce platforms. Experience negotiating payment processing fees and contracts. Why Join Us?
