Job Summary
The Director of Risk Management, Safety, and Security is responsible for overseeing all aspects of risk management, including components of patient and employee safety, and facility security that create potential risk exposures across the organization. This position plays a key leadership role in ensuring reducing clinical and environmental risks facing a multidisciplinary organization, including creating a safe, compliant, and resilient environment for individuals served, visitors, and staff. The director develops and implements policies, protocols, and programs that reduce organizational risk, promote a culture of safety, and maintain readiness for emergencies or adverse events in compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in risk management, Safety Engineering, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or related field (master’s preferred).
Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, safety, or compliance.
Experience working in behavioral health or similar high-risk healthcare environments.
Strong knowledge of federal and state healthcare regulations and accreditation standards.
Experience in Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) preferred.
On-call availability to respond to emergencies as needed.
Reliable transportation must be able to travel between sites as needed.
Essential Job Duties &Responsibilities
Risk Management:
Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management program, focusing on clinical, operational, reputational, and strategic risks.
Lead and manage the facility’s risk management program, focusing on incident reporting, thorough analysis, and effective follow-up measures.
Collaborate with clinical, legal, and administrative leaders to identify risks and develop strategies aimed at reducing harm and preventing liability.
Manage insurance claims and relationships with external carriers, in coordination with legal counsel and executive leadership.
Conduct regular and systematic enterprise-wide risk assessments encompassing both clinical and operational areas.
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and reporting requirements, including Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs), root cause analyses, and sentinel events.
Client and Employee Safety:
Collaborate across departments to develop, implement, and enforce safety protocols that safeguard clients, staff, and visitors, adhering to OSHA, CDC, and other relevant regulatory standards.
Oversee the safety rounding process, identifying and mitigating potential environmental or operational risks.
Coordinate and lead environment of care committees, focusing on infection control and safety initiatives in partnership with nursing and clinical teams.
Investigate safety incidents thoroughly and develop actionable corrective plans to prevent recurrence.
Security Management:
Direct and enhance physical security programs, which include surveillance systems, access control, visitor management, and emergency response planning.
Collaborate with local law enforcement and emergency responders to address safety and security concerns effectively.
Develop and conduct training and exercises for active shooter situations, evacuation procedures, and disaster preparedness drills across all facilities.
Regulatory Compliance and Accreditation Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, often in partnership with other departments including Human Resources and Facilities, including HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission, HRSA, and CMS guidelines.
Support audits and inspections related to risk, safety, or security; develop and implement corrective action plans as needed.
Stay current with relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in healthcare risk management and behavioral health safety.
Leadership & Collaboration:
Serve as an integral member of the risk and compliance team, fostering collaboration across all departments and leadership levels.
Prepare and present regular reports to the Executive Team, Quality Committee, and Board of Directors detailing risk and safety metrics.
Advocate for a proactive, transparent, and just culture surrounding patient safety and incident reporting, ensuring open communication and learning opportunities

Physical Demands/Work Environmen t
This job operates in a professional office environment, which usually has a moderate noise level due to conversations, office machinery, and communication devices. The atmosphere is generally collaborative, although it can vary based on the team's dynamics. The position may involve prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or standing, along with frequent computer use.
This requires proficiency in handling office equipment, such as printers, copiers, and telephones. Occasional lifting or physical activity may be required during inspections or emergency drills. Additionally, travel and work outside of normal hours may be necessary for meetings, presentations, training sessions, and other events.
