Overview
The Stanford VMware Women’s Leadership Innovation Lab is seeking a Director of Research and Education. The Director will work under the general supervision of the Faculty Director and in close collaboration with the Director of Finance and Administration. The role is a senior leadership position responsible for advancing the Lab’s research mission and developing educational programs to train the next generation of gender scholars and change agents. The position requires a visionary leader to drive cutting-edge research initiatives, establish training programs for students and postdoctoral researchers, and create pathways for knowledge transfer to the broader scientific community and public. This is a 100% FTE, one-year fixed-term, exempt position based on the Stanford campus with a potential hybrid work arrangement subject to operational needs. Core duties, qualifications, and compensation details are described below. Responsibilities
Provide strategic oversight of the Lab’s research portfolio, identify opportunities, direct impact initiatives, and manage research staff to ensure compliance with ethical and safety standards. Lead the design of curricula, mentorship frameworks, and professional development programs for students and postdoctoral researchers to prepare them for diverse careers in academia, research, and industry. Oversee dissemination of research through publications, conferences, public engagement, and development of metrics to assess outcomes. Represent the Lab to the broader Stanford community, funders, and external audiences. Manage budgets, supervise staff, and co-design organizational policies that strengthen culture, equity, and accountability. Provide strategic outreach and external partnerships, including fundraising and development activities as applicable. Other duties may be assigned. Education and Experience
Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in the area of specialization or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources. Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills in the area of specialization. Ability to oversee and direct staff and manage budgets and financial plans. Preferred Qualifications
PhD in Sociology Physical Requirements
Frequently stand/walk, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks. Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand, and lift/carry/push/pull objects up to 40 pounds. Very rarely sort/file paperwork or lift/carry/pull objects heavier than 40 pounds. On-campus mobility and reasonable accommodation as required by law. Working Conditions
May work extended hours, evenings or weekends. May travel locally; occasional overnight travel. Compensation and Benefits
