About Mid Atlantic Arts:
Mid Atlantic Arts was established in 1979 to promote and support multi-state arts programming in a region that includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia. It is one of six regional arts organizations in the United States and works in close partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and its member state and jurisdictional arts agencies. Mid Atlantic Arts distinguishes itself through its work in international cultural exchange, model programs in performing arts touring, its knowledge and presence in the jazz field, and its support of folk and traditional arts.
Mid Atlantic Arts (MAA) seeks a highly skilled, motivated, and dynamic Director of Program to lead the program team in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and goals, while also managing budgets, staff, and community relationships. The ideal candidate must be a strategic thinker and have considerable experience and demonstrate success as a senior manager. The Director of Programs will report to the Executive Director and work in close collaboration with staff, board and MAA stakeholders to help ensure that the organization’s strategic and programming goals are met.
Responsibilities:
Program Development and Management
Oversee the development, design, management and delivery of programs with the involvement of a wide cross-section of the stakeholders and partners to ensure compliance with appropriate policies and regulations;
Initiate research for the development of new programs within the context of the mission, strategic goals, and priorities that will support artists, arts organizations and audiences within the region and beyond and help to build a stronger infrastructure for the arts;
Develop methods for evaluation to determine how well programs meet stated goals and objectives, and the needs of the intended constituencies, including making programs more accessible and equitable to the field
Assist in securing funds to support new and existing program activity through the development of concepts or proposals that can be submitted to potential funders;
Provide narrative or other information necessary for reporting to grantors.
Team Management and Development
Supervise and mentor program staff, providing guidance, support, and performance feedback;
Develop and implement a system to evaluate the skill, experience, and professional development needs of all staff;
Ensure smooth coverage of programs during unexpected staffing changes and develop a sustainable plan to support programs during transitions
With support from Human Resources, recruit, hire, and oversee training of new program staff;
Develop and implement staff training and development programs, in partnership with HR and senior staff as needed;
Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that values creativity, innovation, and excellence;
Manage departmental budget and resources effectively to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
Strategic Planning and Implementation (new)
Develop and implement strategic plans for programs, aligning with organizational goals.
Set program goals and objectives;
Identify opportunities for program growth and improvement.
Organization and Community Support
Participate in meetings, conferences, and site visits that have relationship to MAA initiatives and interests;
Ensure that perspectives of people and organizations directly impacted by the work of the programs team are instrumental in shaping the design of the work and have ample opportunity to provide feedback
Qualifications
Skills/Qualifications
A successful senior level program administrator with experience in community, state, national, and international arts programming and policy.
A solid record of experience in programming or program development, with preferred experience in grantmaking and/or fundraising.
Demonstrated success as a highly organized and effective manager and leader.
The ability to think strategically and evaluate issues effectively, analyze budgetary information, and assess organizational capacity.
Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to build and cultivate relationships; the ability to communicate a strong vision and galvanize, manage and develop staff towards it.
Excellent and persuasive written and verbal communication skills; foreign language proficiency a plus.
Proficiency in computer technology including the ability to use various software applications for project and data management, analysis and evaluation.
Experience/Education
Bachelors’ degree required; advanced degree in a relevant field preferred.
Ten years of progressively responsible and successful experience as a senior level administrator with program development, program management, and grant administration responsibilities, preferred.
Demonstrated supervisory experience in a hybrid work environment, preferred.
Experience with funding processes and fundraising.
Experience working in and broad-based knowledge of the various disciplines of the arts; touring and presenting; and, cultural arts exchange.
Knowledge of and familiarity with the national arts community including artists, arts organizations, and funders.
Knowledge of the international arts environment.
