Job Summary
The Director of Plant Operations is responsible for the overall management of hospital facilities, plant maintenance, safety, and regulatory compliance
This includes oversight of physical plant infrastructure, mechanical and environmental systems, safety programs, emergency preparedness, and construction management
The role ensures that the hospital environment is safe, operational, and aligned with organizational standards, budget objectives, and applicable regulations
Essential Functions
Directs and evaluates operations including construction, plant maintenance, groundskeeping, and security
Develops and oversees departmental budgets, vendor contracts, and performance metrics
Ensures compliance with TJC, OSHA, NFPA, CMS, and other local/state/federal regulatory agencies
Serves as facility Safety Officer and chairperson for Environment of Care (EOC) Committee
Plans and executes facility emergency preparedness drills and liaises with Homeland Security and FEMA
Oversees infrastructure maintenance programs, including HVAC, boiler, electrical, fire safety, and life safety systems
Coordinates audits and inspections for safety and facilities readiness
Manages staff recruitment, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and corrective actions
Collaborates with hospital leadership to support strategic facilities planning
Provides leadership in continuous improvement for safety, quality, and operational efficiency
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
Strong knowledge of hospital facilities operations, life safety codes, and emergency preparedness
Technical skills in HVAC, boilers, electrical systems, fire safety, and building systems
Proficiency in interpreting architectural plans and compliance standards
Effective leadership and team-building skills
Critical thinking and problem-solving in high-pressure situations
Excellent verbal and written communication
Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects concurrently
Comfortable with data analysis, budgeting, and strategic planning
Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent (Required)
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Environmental Services, Business, or related field (Preferred)
Licenses/Certifications
Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) or relevant certifications preferred
Facility may require licensure to be obtained
Experience
Minimum two (2) years of experience in hospital maintenance or a related environment
Supervisory experience required
Ten (10) years preferred in healthcare facilities operations
