The Director of Nursing is responsible for planning, implementing, organizing and evaluating all policies, and services for inpatient nursing including, resident assessment, comprehensive care planning, MDS, and education. Directs, coordinates and supervises all nursing staff. Participates in activities related to general operations as requested. In the absence of the Administrator, assumes appropriate responsibility for operation of the facility. Supports facility’s mission to provide highest quality of care by complying with regulatory guidelines, meeting facility standards, and obtaining appropriate certification.
Essential Duties:
Analyzes and evaluates nursing department programs, services, policies and procedures. Collaborates with peers to promote coordinated services to residents.
Ensures systems and processes are effective to limit risk in exposure areas and promote safety. Integrates same into quality improvement activities.
Participates in the facility’s quality improvement activities. Reports to the Quality Committee on a quarterly basis.
Implements and evaluates facility’s compliance to NYS DOH regulations. Assists Administrator in preparation for accreditation and certification surveys. Involves staff at all levels in survey compliance.
Develops and implements systems for documentation necessary to maintain accountability and compliance with external regulations and internal standards, and standardization.
Establishes the management structure of the Nursing Department and recommends work systems to ensure optimum utilization and coordination of personnel and resources.
Organizes and directs the department staff to accomplish required activities in an efficient and effective manner.
Provides feedback to nursing management and staff when opportunities for improvement/excellence are observed. Performs coaching/ disciplinary action as necessary.
Ensures qualified staff are recruited, hired, promoted, oriented and assigned. Recommends methods to enhance recruitment and retention efforts.
Prepares department budget and maintains budget within established budget.
Conducts and reviews employee performance evaluations according to defined schedule. Develops and updates job descriptions and standards as needed.
Coordinates short and intermediate planning for department. Links department goals, budget, and activities to strategic planning.
Ensures customer friendly services. Investigates and resolves all customer complaints.
Submits written reports within established timeframes.
Ensures that the department goals, procedures and practices foster a therapeutic environment and are consistent with the organization’s mission, vision and values.
Oversees development or recommends revision to policy manuals guides, forms, procedures including but not limited to Nursing Policy and Procedures and Abuse. Leads Abuse investigation and protocol in collaboration with Administrator.
Maintains 24 hour direct accountability for the clinical practice of nursing in accordance with professional, facility and regulatory standards and provides expert guidance to Administrator in all matters related to nursing services.
Demonstrates the ability to perform nursing functions in emergency situations.
Uses current research findings and evidence-based practice when implementing nursing care changes.
Ensures procurement and maintenance of clinical equipment and supplies in collaboration with Materials Management.
Oversees effectiveness of department’s education and competency assessment program for nursing staff.
Provides organizational and nursing leadership in the implementation of new technologies including electronic documentation, medication dispensing, and care monitoring systems.
Serves as a resource to staff regarding EMR and clinical technology for the health system.
Promotes efficient and effective use of clinical technology and information systems.
Participates in management planning and related workforce development & evaluation projects.
