JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Finance is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial operations and strategies of our law firm. This role involves managing the firm's finances, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning and leading the financial functions of the Firm. The Director of Finance will provide financial insights and advice to senior management, prepare and present financial reports to stakeholders, and ensure compliance with financial regulations and laws. This role also involves identifying and managing financial risks and building relationships with external partners. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in financial management, excellent communication and leadership skills, and a strategic mindset.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*
Oversees many aspects of the financial and accounting functions of the firm and will serve as a trusted, strategic advisor to firm leadership on finance-related matters.
Serves as a collaborative partner, working with departmental directors/managers and other administrative leaders, to further firm financial goals and outcomes.
Oversees the management of accounts payable, banking, budget & financial reporting, financial systems, general ledger, payroll, tax, and trust areas to achieve high performance standards, as agreed upon with the Chief Financial Officer.
Manages cash and makes recommendations on debt and bank account positions and additions to capital.
Responsible for the annual budget preparation, including reporting of revenue, expense and capital budgets. Works closely with CFO and other Firm Directors in completion of the budget. Checks budget preparation for accuracy and completeness. Sits on the Budget Committee. Responsible for monitoring variances and forecasting throughout the year.
Responsible for preparation and distribution of various financial data and reports for Partner and Associate Evaluations. Will serve as lead accounting contact for members of the Compensation Committee with the overall responsibility of providing nuanced financial data to help better inform the Committee’s decisions.
Responsible for Firm’s audit and tax processes. Ensures the adequacy of external audit process and also internal controls.
Develops and reviews the firm’s accounting policies, processes and procedures, recommending and implementing changes as appropriate.
SPECIAL REQUESTS
Assist with other duties as assigned and special projects as assigned by the CFO.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and experience with financial modeling and data analysis tools.

Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Self-motivated and results-driven, with a continuous improvement mindset and the ability to adapt to change.
To maintain visibility in this leadership role and perform in-office tasks such as check signing, adherence to the Firm's in-office presence policy is expected. This policy currently expects attendance in the designated office, or other AFS offices when traveling, for three days per week.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business or a related field required. CPA and/or MBA preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior financial managerial position, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment.
Strong knowledge of finance law and regulatory standards (GAAP).
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Strong analytical and strategic planning skills.
Proficiency in financial software and databases, Elite/3E or other law firm accounting software preferred.

The annualized good faith base salary range for this position in the following location:
Washington, DC: is a minimum of $300,000 to a maximum of $350,000 per year.
The actual salary rate offered to candidates within that range will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, years of relevant experience, education, applicable certifications, and other relevant professional licenses held, and the candidate’s overall qualifications for the position as assessed by the Firm.
