The ASU Foundation , one of five nonprofit entities that make up ASU Enterprise Partners, is seeking a Director of Development for Barrett, The Honors College.
Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University is a selective, residential college that recruits academically outstanding undergraduates across the nation. Named "Best Honors College" in the nation, this residential community has more National Merit Scholars than MIT, Duke, Brown, Stanford or the University of California-Berkeley, and Barrett students benefit from a $24 million endowment used exclusively to support honors students and their projects.
The director of development is a development professional who works collaboratively with the ASU Foundation for A New American University (ASUF) and with Barrett, The Honors College at ASU, to lead the college's overall development program and secure significant philanthropic investments. The director reports to the ASUF assistant vice president of unit development with a dotted line to the dean of Barrett and supervises a team responsible for alumni/parent relations and development communications. The director serves as a member of the ASUF development team and the college's leadership team. The director must be able to enthusiastically and accurately represent the college to a variety of constituents while working collaboratively to secure philanthropic investments to benefit ASU and Barrett.
What you'll do:
Create and implement a comprehensive, sustainable development program for the college, working with colleagues and managing a team of professionals who work with alumni and parents, scholarship administration, and development communications
Proactively manage a portfolio of and major gift ($100,000+) donors and prospective donors and execute prospect strategies leading to solicitation and investment
Articulate the case for support for honors education at ASU, and develop appropriate messaging to internal and external audiences
Work closely with the dean and faculty leaders to identify fundraising needs and opportunities
Collaborate with directors of development from all ASU colleges on asks pertaining to their Barrett students
Provide oversight to scholarship coordinator to ensure donor intent is followed
Alumni and Parent Relations Provide strategic oversight on alumni and parents programs, leading to donors making philanthropic investments
Manage a team to staff alumni and parent boards and councils
Work closely and strategically with the ASUF Sun Devil Family Association to engage parents as philanthropic investors in the college
Partner with the ASUF Office of Annual Giving to reach out to parents, alumni and students
Development Communications Provide oversight on various development communications including a parent e-newsletter, an alumni e-newsletter, donor impact reports, scholarship reports, stewardship materials
Work in a results-oriented, dynamic environment with complex and evolving relationships and priorities
Other development related duties as assigned
Work closely with ASUF colleagues to integrate the college's fundraising priorities and opportunities within broader ASU initiatives and to obtain specialized expertise
Furnish timely reports on progress toward assigned goals and solicitation results
Guide the development of written proposals, white papers, strategic plans, budgets and the other related collateral materials needed to deepen prospect engagement for securing a gift
Provide the dean and others with appropriate background information for donor visits
Collaborate with Barrett staff on engaging donors, alumni, and parents in Barrett programs and events
What you'll need: Collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information
Strong and collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by phone
Knowledge of principles and techniques of development/fundraising, preferably in higher education
Able to secure personal appointments and qualify new prospects
Demonstrated achievement in securing philanthropic investments
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities while being flexible
Team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing constituencies
Ability to represent the institution well
An advocate's belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials
Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties
Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer data base systems
Documented success in personally implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that use a relationship-building and moves management approach leading to successful gift closure
Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans
Demonstrable experience in stewardship plans leading to additional investments
Relevant qualifications: Bachelor's degree and five years of successful professional development and/or fundraising related experience, preferably in higher education.
