Job Overview:
The Director of Design will lead and manage the Design Team, providing direction and mentorship while fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. This role requires strong leadership, exceptional management skills, and a deep understanding of the live entertainment industry. The Director of Design will work closely with senior executives, department heads, and other stakeholders to ensure the achievement of business objectives.
Responsibilities: Oversee all aspects of the Design Team's operations, including onboarding, scheduling, time-off approvals, and employee evaluations. Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to the design department, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment. Collaborate with Directors of Fabrication, Project Management, and Technical Operations to ensure accurate timelines, deliverables, and documentation for installation projects. Supervise the Design Manager to ensure effective management of the design team, including drafters, mechanical designers, and lead designers. Lead client meetings and design reviews to discuss, approve, and guide project designs. Manage the department's budget, track financial performance, and identify cost-saving opportunities. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, and partners, representing the department in leadership meetings. Prepare and review bid packages to ensure alignment between design needs and fabrication capabilities. Identify and implement improvements in design processes, staying updated on industry trends and integrating new technologies. Ensure safety and compliance processes are current and consistently applied. Perform other duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the department and company.
Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Technical Theatre, Engineering) or equivalent professional experience. Minimum of 5 years' experience in mechanical design with strong proficiency in 3D CAD software, particularly Autodesk Inventor. Knowledge of Revit, Rhino, or SolidWorks is a plus. Proven experience in a senior management role, preferably as a director, with demonstrated leadership and team development skills. Experience working in a fabrication environment and managing both new installation projects and retrofits. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with clients, vendors, and team members. Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Experience with budget management and financial reporting, including identifying cost-saving opportunities. Knowledge of modern set construction techniques and/or live entertainment technology. Enthusiastic and passionate about projects and processes, with a high level of integrity and professionalism. Willingness to work beyond 40 hours per week when project demands require, including weekends and evenings. Authorized to work in the United States upon hire.

Pay Range: $110,000 - $140,000
The specific compensation for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
