The Director of Continuous Improvement plays a critical role in driving the long-range success of the Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex. This role will develop, align, and execute the Continuous Improvement program for the Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex, supporting the Refinery Manager and the Refinery Leadership team to align site goals to achieve improvement plans to close best practice gaps with Phillips 66 peer sites, key competitors and other industries to achieve world class performance across the key Refining pillars: HSE, People, Reliability, Cost, Margin.
This role reports directly to the Technical Manager, and will be responsible to perform the following key responsibilities:
Responsibilities May Include:
Support the RLT and Refinery Manager in:
Performing gap analysis
Developing and implementing site tactics and initiatives to close gaps
Participate in Solomon results review, assessment and prioritization of gap closure tactics.
Facilitate ideation sessions to identify initiatives to achieve improvement goals
Interface with Workstream Leads and Initiative Owners to progress initiatives, documenting progress in Wave.
Measuring performance of efforts and initiatives in closing gaps
Use dashboards or scorecards where value-added
Work with the Finance Manager to ensure efforts are traceable to the bottom line
Drive Continuous Improvement culture and lead by example
Enhance and execute Continuous Improvement structure through site-based governance meetings and formal review meetings
Develop and execute communication plans to communicate the vision, the benefits, the “why”, and progress to all LCMC personnel
Work across all LCMC departments to create alignment on focus areas for improvement
Develop plans to establish and sustain a Continuous Improvement culture and mindset at all levels of the organization
Act as a lead to all site personnel in Continuous Improvement activities
Work across boundaries to drive success
Work with Initiative Owners and Workstream Leads to remove barriers to execution and success
Champion the LEAN business model – eliminate waste
Coach, mentor and train the organization – ‘Connect the front-line to the bottom-line’.
Challenge the status quo when necessary.
Site-lead for incorporating LEAN/Continuous Improvement concepts into developmental training programs.
Gather and share best practices from other P66 sites and industry
Support each department in developing and executing their goals and improvement plans
Communicate progress of improvements to LCMC RLT, and corporate executive teams
Represent LCMC as a member of the Refining-wide Continuous Improvement Team
Provide feedback and key learnings to the wider organization
Work with other site directors to ensure a cohesive company-wide approach
Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the US
Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering
5 or more years of Refining experience
Proficiency in managing multiple complex projects simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications:
10 or more years of Refining experience
Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide a diverse team via influence
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines and with external partners
Excellent communication skills – ability to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively
Ability to analyze problems, identify root causes, and implement solutions
Ability to manage a very diverse set of assignments and priorities
Proven ability to self-start and work alone, as well as work within a team setting
Curiosity to learn new sides of the business to assist teams in identifying methods to reduce waste
Commitment to personal and organizational improvement
Ability to adapt and adjust quickly to directional changes
First-hand experience with Business Transformation activities within Phillips 66
Background / knowledge of refining economics and margins
The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
