Job Summary
The Gene and Cell Therapy Institute (GCTI) is a newly created system-wide Institute under Mass General Brigham. The Institute will foster a world-class gene and cell therapy program that will leverage ongoing, groundbreaking scientific research efforts across the MGB system.
The mission of GCTI is to bring together the community of MGB investigators which can utilize gene and cell therapy platforms to achieve their scientific and clinical goals and improve the health of patients. The Institute will differentiate itself by harnessing the exceptional strengths of clinician scientists, the large and unique patient population, and major discoveries throughout the hospital system to propel MGB as the leader in Gene & Cell therapies.
The Director of mRNA-LNP Genetic Medicine will lead a cross-functional team in developing next-generation mRNA delivery platforms and coordinate translational efforts across academic and clinical stakeholders. We seek an innovative and collaborative scientist whose research focuses on the design, development, and clinical translation of messenger RNA (mRNA) therapeutics delivered via lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for the treatment of genetic diseases, cancer, or infectious diseases.
The ideal candidate will establish a vigorous, externally funded research program, contribute to graduate and medical education, and foster cross-disciplinary collaborations. The candidate will also work closely with MGB investigators to identify GCT-related RNA therapeutic assets for further testing and development. The individual will report to the Head of Research at GCTI.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Faculty Role:
• Establish and maintain a high-impact, externally funded research program.
• Publish in leading peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
• Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior researchers.
• Teach in undergraduate, graduate, or professional programs as assigned.
Director Role:
• Lead strategic research and development initiatives in mRNA-LNP delivery systems.
• Oversee a core facility or translational unit focused on formulation, optimization, and preclinical testing of mRNA-based therapies.
• Serve as a liaison between basic science, clinical, and industry collaborators.
• Pursue translational partnerships and funding opportunities (e.g., NIH, DARPA, BARDA, biotech industry).
Qualifications
Required:
Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. in bioengineering, molecular biology, pharmacology, or a related field.
Strong record of research productivity and publication in relevant areas (e.g., RNA therapeutics, nanomedicine, gene therapy).
Experience with LNP design, formulation, and in vivo delivery techniques.
At least 3-5 years of leadership and management experiences at leading discovery teams required
At least 5-7 years of experience in strategies for targeting therapeutic agents to specific tissues or cells, such as lipid nanoparticle delivery, etc. required
Preferred: Postdoctoral or industry experience in mRNA therapeutic development.
Track record of securing extramural funding.
Demonstrated leadership in cross-disciplinary or translational projects.
Familiarity with regulatory and manufacturing considerations in genetic medicine.
